An Episode Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAABBACDECDE F GHIGGIHGDJKDJK

There was a man rode into town one dayA
Barefooted hatless and without a coatB
It was the dead of winter Round his throatB
Were marks of violence bits and wisps of hayA
Bristled his beard and hair From far awayA
We saw him coming desolate and remoteB
And wild his gaze that of no man took noteB
Or seeming note and nothing would he sayA
But when he'd had a drink then drunk some moreC
He told us he had sold tobacco seeD
And all was lost At that he caught his breathE
Last night a knock came at his cabin doorC
His son who answered was shot dead And heD
Was caught and chok'd and almost beat to deathE

They said he'd sold tobacco and he knewG
They ought to kill him burn his house and barnH
And would unless he gave them this with scornI
The money he'd received What could he doG
He had a little money it was trueG
Hid in an old pot underneath the cornI
There in the crib he told them 'Twas a yarnH
To get away They were a desperate crewG
They set to work upon the crib and heD
Got loose and on a horse and took to flightJ
They shot at him Whatever might occurK
He did not care now they had burned you seeD
His home for miles its glare lit up the nightJ
His wife and daughters God knows where they wereK
