A Maid Who Died Old Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABAB CDCDCD EFEFEG HIHIHI

Frail shrunken face so pinched and wornA
That life has carved with care and doubtB
So weary waiting night and mornA
For that which never came aboutB
Pale lamp so utterly forlornA
In which God's light at last is outB
-
Gray hair that lies so thin and primC
On either side the sunken browsD
And soldered eyes so deep and dimC
No word of man could now arouseD
And hollow hands so virgin slimC
Forever clasped in silent vowsD
-
Poor breasts that God designed for loveE
For baby lips to kiss and pressF
That never felt yet dreamed thereofE
The human touch the child caressF
That lie like shriveled blooms aboveE
The heart's long perished happinessG
-
O withered body Nature gaveH
For purposes of death and birthI
That never knew and could but craveH
Those things perhaps that make life worthI
Rest now alas within the graveH
Sad shell that served no end on EarthI
