In samite sark yclad was sheA
And that fair glimmerish band of goldB
Which crowned long savage locks of hairC
In the moon brent coldB
-
She with big eyeballs gloomed and gloweredD
And lightly hummed some Elfin's songE
And one could naught save on her stareC
And fare alongE
-
Yea sad and lute like was that songE
And softly said its mysteryA
Which quaintly sang in elden verseF
Thy love I'll beA
-
And oft it said I love thee trueG
Sir Ewain champion of the fairC
And never wist he what a witchH
Was that one thereC
-
And never wist he that a witchH
Had bound him with her wily hairC
Eke with dark art had ta'en his heartI
To slay him thereC
-
And all his soul did wax amortI
To stars to hills to slades to streamsJ
And it but held that sorceress fairC
As one of dreamsJ
-
And now he kens some castle grayK
Wild turrets ivied in the moonL
Old where through woodlands foaming onM
A torrent shoneN
-
In its high hall full twenty knightsO
With visors barred all sternly standI
The following of some gracious braveP
Lord of the landI
-
And lo when that dim damoselQ
Moved down the hall they louted lowQ
And she was queen of all that bandI
That dame of snowQ
-
Now on that knight she stared eftsoonsO
And cried on high unto her crewG
Behold Sir Knights the dastard braveP
Your king that slewG
-
And all those heathen knights wox wildI
Attonce and all against him draveP
Long battle blades and daggers brightI
Aloft did waveP
-
The press on him puissant bareC
And smote him to the rush strown earthR
Tall tall o'er all that Fairy roseO
Aloud with mirthR
