Pale as a star that shines through rainA
Her face was seen at the window paneA
Her sad frail face that watched in vainA
-
The face of a girl whose brow was wanB
To whom the kind sun spoke at dawnC
And a star and the moon when the day was goneC
-
And oft and often the sun had saidD
'O fair white face O sweet fair headD
Come talk with me of the love that's dead '-
-
And she would sit in the sun awhileE
Down in the garth by the old stone dialF
Where never again would he make her smileE
-
And often the first bright star o'erheadD
Had whispered 'Sweet where the rose blooms redD
Come look with me for the love that's dead '-
-
And she would wait with the star she knewG
Where the fountain splashed and the roses blewG
Where never again would he come to wooG
-
And oft the moon when she lay in bedD
Had sighed 'Dear heart in the orchardsteadD
Come dream with me of the love that's dead '-
-
And she would stand in the moon the dimH
Where the fruit made heavy the apple limbH
Where never again would she dream with himH
-
So summer passed and the autumn cameI
And the wind torn boughs were touched with flameI
But her life and her sorrow remained the sameI
-
Or if she changed as it comes aboutD
A life may change through trouble and doubtD
As a candle flickers and then goes outD
-
'T was only to grow more quiet and wanB
Sadly waiting at dusk and at dawnC
For the coming of love forever goneC
-
And so one night when the star looked inJ
It kissed her face that was white and thinJ
And murmured 'Come thou free of sin '-
-
And when the moon on another nightD
Beheld her lying still and whiteD
It sighed ''T is well now all is right '-
-
And when one morning the sun aroseK
And they bore her bier down the garden closeL
It touched her saying 'At last repose '-
-
And they laid her down so young and fairM
Where the grass was withered the bough was bareM
All wrapped in the light of her golden hairM
-
So autumn passed and the winter wentD
And spring like a blue eyed penitentD
Came telling her beads of blossom and scentD
-
And lo to the grave of the beautifulF
The strong sun cried 'Why art thou dullF
Awake awake Forget thy skull '-
-
And the evening star and the moon aboveN
Called out 'O dust now speak thereofN
Proclaim thyself Arise O love '-
-
And the skull and the dust in the darkness heardD
Each icy germ in its cerements stirredD
As Lazarus moved at the Lord's loud wordD
-
And a flower arose on the mound of greenO
White as the robe of the NazareneO
To testify of the life unseenO
-
And I paused by the grave then went my wayP
And it seemed that I heard the lily sayP
'Here was a miracle wrought to day '-
