Why? Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAACA DEFEGE CAAADAHAIA CJKJLJAJWhy is it we grasp at the shadow | A |
That flits from us swift as thought | B |
While the real that maketh the shadow | A |
Stands in our way unsought | A |
And why do we wonder and wonder | C |
What's beyond the hill tops of thought | A |
- | |
Why is it the things that we sigh for | D |
Are the things that we never can reach | E |
Why only the sternest experience | F |
A lession of patience can teach | E |
And why hold we so careless and lightly | G |
The treasures that are in our reach | E |
- | |
- | |
Why is it we wait for the future | C |
Or dwell on the scenes of the past | A |
Rather than live in the present | A |
Hastening from us so fast | A |
Why is it the prizes we toil for | D |
So tempting in fancy's mould cast | A |
Prove when to our lips we have pressed them | H |
Only dead sea apples at last | A |
And why are the crowns and the crosses | I |
So wondrous inequally classed | A |
- | |
Ask it ye over and over | C |
Let the winds waft your question on high | J |
Till memory wanes with the ages | K |
Till the stars in eternity die | J |
And out from the bloom and the sunshine | L |
From the rainbow o'erarching the sky | J |
From the night and the gloom and the tempest | A |
Echo will answer you Why | J |
