To The Holy Father Sanson Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GAGA HIHI JKJK ABAB LMLML

Oh holy father list thee to my prayerA
I may not kneel to thee as others kneelB
And tell my heart aches with the suppliant's airA
But fiercer burns the fire I must concealB
-
My soul is groping in the mists of doubtC
The sunlight and the shadows all are goneD
Only a cold gray cloud my life's aboutC
Nor ever vision of a fairer dawnD
-
A father ne'er my brow in loving smoothedE
Nor taught my baby tongue to lisp his nameF
No mother's voice my childish sorrows soothedE
Nor sought my wild imperious will to tameF
-
Yet ran my life like some bright bubbling springG
Too full of thoughtless happiness to careA
If that the future might more gladness bringG
Or might its skies be clouded or be fairA
-
Afar upon the purple hills of SpainH
Since waned the moons of half a year agoI
I sported reckless as the laughing mainH
Nor dreamed in life a thought of grief to knowI
-
To day I pine here in a chain whose gallJ
Is bitterer than drop of wormwood broughtK
From that salt sea where nothing lives and allJ
The recompense my willfulness has broughtK
-
Oh holy father list thee to my prayerA
And though I may not kneel as others kneelB
And tell my heart aches with a suppliant airA
I crave they grace a sickened soul to healB
-
Here close beside this sacred font of goldL
My humble prayer oh father I will layM
With all its weight of misery untoldL
And wait impatient that which thou wilt sayM
REVENITAL
