Opening The Gate For Papa Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEDE FEGE HHCH AIII JKDK ILML FNON CPCP GNGN FHMH

Hurrying out to the gatewayA
Go two little pattering feetB
Eagerly out through the palingsC
Peer two eyes bright and sweetB
-
A footstep as eager is answeringD
The sweet eyes that patiently waitE
And papa is kissing and blessingD
The baby that opens the gateE
-
And every day all the long SummerF
At noontime and evening lateE
The little one's watching for papaG
Waiting to open the gateE
-
And now the bright Summer is endedH
And Autumn's gay mantle unrolledH
The maple leaves wooing the breezesC
Are gorgeous in crimson and goldH
-
At noonday the face at the gatewayA
Is flushed with a feverish glowI
At night the bright head on the pillowI
Is tossing in pain to and froI
-
The father kneels down in his anguishJ
And stifles the sobs with groanK
He knows that his idol is goingD
Going out in the midnight aloneK
-
He buries his face in the pillowI
Close close to the fast failing breathL
A little arm clasps his neck closelyM
A voice growing husky in deathL
-
Says pleadingly half in a whisperF
Please darling papa don't cryN
I know Birdie's going to HeavenO
I heard doctor say he will dieN
-
But I'll ask God for one of the windowsC
The pretty star eyes look out throughP
And when you come up with the angelsC
I'll sure be the first to see youP
-
And maybe I'll find my dear mammaG
And you'll come up too by and byN
And Birdie will watch for you papaG
And open the gate of the skyN
-
The little hand falls from his shoulderF
All nerveless the blue eyes dilateH
A shuddering sigh then the babyM
Is waiting to open the gateH
