You are watching a ship O maiden fairA
With parted lips and wistful airA
The ship that out from the sheltered bayB
With white sails spread moves slow awayB
And I know my girl the thoughts that burnC
In your heart are of ship's returnC
Ah I know so well how your pulses beatD
With the great sea sobbing at your feetD
And the yellow stars in southern skiesE
Are brighter not than your love bright eyesE
I too have stood on the sea wet sandF
And tearful waved a farewell handF
And watched with many a longing prayerA
My face like yours was young and fairA
And my eyes were bright as the diamond's glowG
They've lost their sparkle long agoG
I stand along on the beach to dayB
Watching the ships that sail awayB
But never a sail from over the seaH
The flowing tide will bring to meH
My ships have come from seaH
-
The first was builded with childish handF
It floated away a castle grandF
A beautiful bubble with rainbow huesI
Lined with the crystal of morning dewsI
To break at my feet by the sunny seaH
A beautiful bubble came back to meH
Came back from my ship at seaH
-
I fashioned another in gladsome wayB
And sent it forth on a Summer dayB
I see it yet a fairer craftJ
Never at danger mocking laughedJ
Its shrouds were the sheen of happy hoursK
Its helm a wreath of orange flowrsK
And I freighted it down with love and truthL
The golden hopes of my sunny youthL
Had it lived the storm but it could not beH
A stranded wreck on the surf washed leaH
My ship came home from seaH
-
And then a smiling fairy barkM
A fragile precious freighted arkM
Out on life's ocean drear and darkM
And I prayed to God as I never beforeN
To shield this back from the tempest's roarN
To spare me this but it could not beH
A tiny coffin came back to meH
Came back from my ship at seaH
-
With reckless hand I launched againO
A venture on the treacherous mainP
Bound for ambition's dizzy courtQ
Sailed from a hopeless loveless portQ
With gloomy walls whose silence chilledR
With ghostly haunting memories filledR
With never a breath of the roses deadS
Never a rest for a weary headS
Never a dream of a sweet to beH
Hopeless loveless still to meH
My ship came home from seaH
-
The last and least of all the shipsK
Fashioned with hands and heart and lipsK
I pushed from shore with its decks untrodS
And the freight it bore was my faith in GodS
I recked not whither its way nor whenO
Nor how if ever 'twould come againO
And this alone came back to meH
Rich laden from the stormy seaH
And so sweet maiden while your dreamsK
Paint fairest all that fairest seemsK
I stand with you and watch to dayS
The ship that sails form the shore awayS
But never a sail from over the seaH
The flowing tide will bring to meH
My ships have come from seaH
