You are watching a ship O maiden fair	A
With parted lips and wistful air	A
The ship that out from the sheltered bay	B
With white sails spread moves slow away	B
And I know my girl the thoughts that burn	C
In your heart are of ship's return	C
Ah I know so well how your pulses beat	D
With the great sea sobbing at your feet	D
And the yellow stars in southern skies	E
Are brighter not than your love bright eyes	E
I too have stood on the sea wet sand	F
And tearful waved a farewell hand	F
And watched with many a longing prayer	A
My face like yours was young and fair	A
And my eyes were bright as the diamond's glow	G
They've lost their sparkle long ago	G
I stand along on the beach to day	B
Watching the ships that sail away	B
But never a sail from over the sea	H
The flowing tide will bring to me	H
My ships have come from sea	H

The first was builded with childish hand	F
It floated away a castle grand	F
A beautiful bubble with rainbow hues	I
Lined with the crystal of morning dews	I
To break at my feet by the sunny sea	H
A beautiful bubble came back to me	H
Came back from my ship at sea	H
	-
I fashioned another in gladsome way	B
And sent it forth on a Summer day	B
I see it yet a fairer craft	J
Never at danger mocking laughed	J
Its shrouds were the sheen of happy hours	K
Its helm a wreath of orange flowrs	K
And I freighted it down with love and truth	L
The golden hopes of my sunny youth	L
Had it lived the storm but it could not be	H
A stranded wreck on the surf washed lea	H
My ship came home from sea	H

And then a smiling fairy bark	M
A fragile precious freighted ark	M
Out on life's ocean drear and dark	M
And I prayed to God as I never before	N
To shield this back from the tempest's roar	N
To spare me this but it could not be	H
A tiny coffin came back to me	H
Came back from my ship at sea	H
	-
With reckless hand I launched again	O
A venture on the treacherous main	P
Bound for ambition's dizzy court	Q
Sailed from a hopeless loveless port	Q
With gloomy walls whose silence chilled	R
With ghostly haunting memories filled	R
With never a breath of the roses dead	S
Never a rest for a weary head	S
Never a dream of a sweet to be	H
Hopeless loveless still to me	H
My ship came home from sea	H
	-
The last and least of all the ships	K
Fashioned with hands and heart and lips	K
I pushed from shore with its decks untrod	S
And the freight it bore was my faith in God	S
I recked not whither its way nor when	O
Nor how if ever 'twould come again	O
And this alone came back to me	H
Rich laden from the stormy sea	H
And so sweet maiden while your dreams	K
Paint fairest all that fairest seems	K
I stand with you and watch to day	S
The ship that sails form the shore away	S
But never a sail from over the sea	H

My ships have come from sea	H
