A JOYOUS FESTIVALA
The gathering backB
Of scattered flowrets to the household wreathC
Brothers and sisters from their sever'd homesD
Meeting with ardent smile to renovateE
The love that sprang from cradle memoriesF
And childhood's sports and whose perennial streamG
Still threw fresh crystals o'er the sands of lifeH
Each bore some treasured picture of the pastI
Some graphic incident by mellowing timeJ
Made beautiful while ever and anonK
Timbrel and harp broke forth each pause betweenK
Banquet and wine cup and the dance gave speedL
To youthful spirits and prolong'd the joyM
-
-
-
The patriarch father with a chasten'd heartN
Partook his children's mirth having God's fearO
Ever before him Earnestly he broughtP
His offerings and his prayers for every oneK
Of that beloved group lest in the swellQ
And surging superflux of happinessR
They might forget the Hand from whence it cameS
Perchance displease the AlmightyT
Many a careU
Had he that wealth creates Not such as lurksV
In heaps metallic which the rust corrodesW
But wealth that fructifies within the earthX
Whence cometh bread or o'er its surface rovesW
In peaceful forms of quadrupedal lifeH
That thronging round the world's first father cameS
To take their names 'mid Eden's tranquil shadesW
Ere sin was bornK
Obedient to the yokeY
Five hundred oxen turn'd the furrow'd glebeZ
Where agriculture hides his buried seedL
Waiting the harvest hope while patient wroughtP
An equal number of that race who shareU
The labor of the steed without his praiseW
Three thousand camels with their arching necksW
Ships of the desert knelt to do his willA2
And bear his surplus wealth to distant climesW
While more than twice three thousand snowy sheepB2
Whitened the hills Troops of retainers fedC2
These flocks and herds and their subsistence drewD2
From the same lord so that this man of UzW
Greater than all the magnates of the eastE2
Dwelt in old time before usW
True he gaveF2
And faithfully the hireling his rewardG2
Counting such justice 'mid the happier formsW
Of Charity which with a liberal handH2
He to the sad and suffering poor dispensedI2
Eyes was he to the blind and to the lameS
Feet while the stranger and the traveller foundJ2
Beneath the welcome shelter of his roofK2
The blessed boon of hospitalityT
-
To him the fatherless and widow soughtP
For aid and counsel Fearlessly he roseW
For those who had no helper His just mindL2
Brought stifled truth to light disarm'd the wilesW
Of power and gave deliverance to the weakM2
He pluck'd the victim from the oppressor's graspN2
And made the tyrant trembleA
To his wordsW
Men listened as to lore oracularD2
And when beside the gate he took his seatO2
The young kept silence and the old rose upP2
To do him honor After his decreeD2
None spake again for as a prince he dweltQ2
Wearing the diadem of righteousnessW
And robed in that respect which greatness winsW
When leagued with goodness and by wisdom crown'dJ2
The grateful prayers and blessings of the soulsW
Ready to perish silently distill'dR2
Upon him as he sleptS2
So as a treeD2
Whose root is by the river's brink he grewD2
And flourish'd while the dews like balm drops hungT2
All night upon his branchesW
Yet let noneK
Of woman born presume to build his hopesW
On the worn cliff of brief prosperityD2
Or from the present promise predicateE
The future joy The exulting bird that singsW
Mid the green curtains of its leafy nestU2
His tuneful trust untroubled there to liveV2
And there to die may meet the archer's shaftW2
When next it spreads the wingX2
The tempest foldsW
O'er the smooth forehead of the summer noonK
Its undiscover'd purpose to emergeY2
Resistless from its armory and whelmS
In floods of ruin ere the day declineK
-
-
-
Lightning and swordG2
Swift messengers and sharpZ2
Reapers that leave no gleanings In their pathA3
Silence and desolation fiercely stalkB3
O'er trampled hills and on the blood stain'd plainsW
There is no low of kine or bleat of flocksW
The fields are rifled and the shepherds slainK
-
The Man of Uz who stood but yestermornK
Above all compeers clothed with wealth and powerD2
To day is poorer than his humblest hindL2
A whirlwind from the desertC3
All unwarn'dC3
Its fury came Earth like a vassal shookD3
Majestic trees flew hurtling through the airD2
Like rootless reedsW
There was no time for flightC3
Buried in household wrecks all helpless layE3
Masses of quivering lifeH
Job's eldest sonK
That day held banquet for their numerous lineK
At his own house With revelry and songF3
One moment in the glow of kindred heartsW
The lordly mansion rang the next they layE3
Crush'd neath its ruinsW
He the childless sireD2
Last of his race and lonely as the pineK
That crisps and blackens 'neath the lightning shaftC3
Upon the cliff with such a rushing tideC3
The mountain billows of his misery cameS
Drove they not Reason from her beacon holdC3
Swept they not his strong trust in Heaven awayE3
-
List list the sufferer speaksW
The Lord who gaveF2
Hath taken away and blessed be His nameS
-
Oh Patriarch teach us mid this changeful lifeH
Not to mistake the ownership of joysW
Entrusted to us for a little whileG3
But when the Great Dispenser shall reclaimS
His loans to render them with praises backB
As best befits the indebtedC3
Should a tearD2
Moisten the offering He who knows our frameS
And well remembereth that we are but dustC3
Is full of pityC3
It was said of oldC3
Time conquer'd Grief But unto me it seemsW
That Grief overmastereth Time It shows how wideC3
The chasm between us and our smitten joysW
And saps the strength wherewith at first we wentC3
Into life's battle We perchance have dream'dC3
That the sweet smile the sunbeam of our homeS
The prattle of the babe the Spoiler seiz'dC3
Had but gone from us for a little whileG3
And listen'd in our fallacy of hopeH3
At hush of eve for the returning stepI3
That wake the inmost pulses of the heartC3
To extasy till iron handed GriefJ3
Press'd down the nevermore into our soulK3
Deadening us with its weightC3
The man of UzW
As the slow lapse of days and nights reveal'dC3
The desolation of his povertyC3
Felt every nerve that at the first great shockL3
Was paralyzed grow sensitive and shrinkM3
As from a fresh cut wound There was no sonK
To come in beauty of his manly primeS
With words of counsel and with vigorous handC3
To aid him in his need no daughter's armS
To twine around him in his wearinessW
Nor kiss of grandchild at the even tideC3
Going to rest with prayer upon its lipsW
-
Still a new trial waitsW
The blessed healthN3
Heaven's boon thro' which with unbow'd form we bearD2
Burdens and ills forsook him MaladiesW
Of fierce and festering virulence attack'dC3
His swollen limbs Incessant grinding painsW
Laid his strength prostrate till he counted lifeH
A loathed thing Dire visions frighted sleepB2
That sweet restorer of the wasted frameS
And mid his tossings to and fro he moan'dC3
Oh when shall I arise and Night be goneK
-
Despondence seized him To the lowliest placeW
Alone he stole and sadly took his seatC3
In dust and ashesW
She his bosom friendC3
The sharer of his lot for many yearsW
Sought out his dark retreat Shuddering she sawW
His kingly form like living sepulchreD2
And in the maddening haste of sorrow saidC3
God hath forgottenK
She with him had borneK
Unuttered woe o'er the untimely gravesW
Of all whom she had nourished shared with himS
The silence of a home that hath no childC3
The plunge from wealth to want the base contemptC3
Of menial and of ingrate but to seeC3
The dearest object of adoring loveO3
Her next to God a prey to vile diseaseW
Hideous and loathsome all the beauty marredC3
That she had worshipped from her ardent youthP3
Deeming it half divine she could not bearD2
Her woman's strength gave way and impious wordsW
In her despair she utteredC3
But her lordC3
To deeper anguish stung by her defectC3
And rash advice reprovingly repliedC3
Pointing to Him who meeteth out belowQ3
Both good and evil in mysterious loveO3
And she was silencedC3
What a sacred powerD2
Hath hallow'd Friendship o'er the nameless illsW
That throng our pilgrimage Its sympathyC3
Doth undergird the drooping and upholdC3
The foot that falters in its miry pathA3
It grows more precious as the hair grows greyD2
Time's alchymy that rendereth so much drossW
Back for our gay entrustments shows more pureD2
The perfect essence of its sanctityC3
Gold unalloyedC3
How doth the cordial graspN2
Of hands that twined with ours in school days nowK
Delight us as our sunbeam nears the westC3
Soothing perchance our self esteem with proofsW
That 'mid all faults the good have loved us stillA2
And quickening with redoubled energyC3
To do or sufferD2
The three friends of JobZ
Who in the different regions where they dweltC3
Teman and Naamah and the Shuhite landC3
Heard tidings of his dire calamityC3
Moved by one impulse journey'd to impartC3
Their sorrowing sympathyC3
Yet when they sawW
Him fallen so low so chang'd that scarce a traceW
Remained to herald his identityC3
Down by his side upon the earth they sateC3
Uttering no language save the gushing tearD2
Spontaneous homage to a grief so greatC3
-
-
-
Oh Silence born of Wisdom we have feltC3
Thy fitness when beside the smitten friendC3
We took our place The voiceless sympathyC3
The tear the tender pressure of the handC3
Interpreted more perfectly than wordsW
The purpose of our soulK3
We speak to errD2
Waking to agony some broken chordC3
Or bleeding nerve that slumbered Words are weakM2
When God's strong discipline doth try the soulK3
And that deep silence was more eloquentC3
Than all the pomp of speechR3
Yet the long pauseW
Of days and nights gave scope for troubled thoughtC3
And their bewildered minds unskillfullyK3
Launching all helmless on a sea of doubtC3
Explored the cause for which such woes were sentC3
Forgetful that this mystery of lifeH
Yields not to man's solution Passing onK
From natural pity to philosophyC3
That deems Heaven's judgments penal they inferr'dC3
Some secret sin unshrived by penitenceW
That drew such awful visitations downK
While studying thus the wherefore with vain toilK3
Of painful cogitation lo a voiceW
Hollow and hoarse as from the mouldering tombS
-
Perish the day in which I saw the lightC3
The day when first my mother's nursing careD2
Sheltered my helplessness Let it not comeS
Into the number of the joyful monthsW
Let blackness stain it and the shades of deathS3
Forever terrify itC3
For it cutC3
Not off as an untimely birth my spanK
Nor let me sleep where the poor prisoners hearD2
No more the oppressor where the wicked ceaseW
From troubling and the weary are at restC3
Now as the roar of waves my sorrows swellK3
And sighs like tides burst forth till I forgetC3
To eat my bread That which I greatly fearedC3
Hath come upon me Not in heedless prideC3
Nor wrapped in arrogance of full contentC3
I dwelt amid the tide of prosperous daysW
And yet this trouble cameS
With mien unmovedC3
The Temanite reprovingly repliedC3
Who can refrain longer from words even thoughQ3
To speak be grief Thou hast the instructor beenK
Of many and their model how to actC3
When trial came upon them if their kneesW
Bow'd down thou saidst be strong and they obey'dC3
But now it toucheth thee and thou dost shrinkM3
And murmuring faint The monitor forgetsW
The precepts he hath taught Is this thy faithT3
Thy confidence the uprightness of thy wayD2
Whoever perish'd being innocentC3
And when were those who walk'd in righteous waysW
Cut off How oft I've seen that those who sowW
The seeds of evil secretly and plowW
Under a veil of darkness reap the sameS
-
-
-
In visions of the night when deepest sleepB2
Falls upon men fear seiz'd me all my bonesW
Trembled and every stiffening hair rose upP2
A spirit pass'd before me but I sawW
No form thereof I knew that there it stoodC3
Even though my straining eyes discern'd it notC3
Then from its moveless lips a voice burst forthU3
Is man more just than God Is mortal manK
More pure than He who made himS
Lo he putsW
No trust in those who serve him and doth chargeV3
Angels with folly How much less in themS
Dwellers in tents of clay whose pride is crush'dC3
Before the moth From morn to eve they dieC3
And none regard itC3
So despise thou notC3
The chastening of the Almighty ever justC3
For did thy spirit please him it should riseW
More glorious from the storm cloud all the earthX
At peace with thee new offspring like the grassW
Cheering thy home and when thy course was doneK
Even as a shock of corn comes fully ripeW3
Into the garner should thy burial beC3
Beldv'd and wept of allK3
-
Mournful aroseW
The sorrowful responseW
Oh that my griefJ3
Were in the balance laid by faithful handsW
And feeling hearts To the afflicted soulK3
Friends should be comforters But mine have dealtC3
Deceitfully as fails the shallow brookD3
When summer's need is sorestC3
Did I sayD2
Bring me a gift or from your flowing wealthN3
Give solace to my desolate penuryC3
Or with your pitying influence neutralizeW
My cup of scorn poured out by abject handsW
That thus ye mock me with contemptuous wordsW
And futile arguments and dig a pitC3
In which to whelm the man you call a friendC3
Still darkly hinting at some heinous sinK
Mysteriously concealedC3
Writes conscious guiltC3
No transcript on the brow Hangs it not outC3
Its signal there altho' it seem to hideC3
'Neath an impervious shroudC3
Look thro' the depthsW
Of my unshrinking eye deep deep withinK
What see ye there what gives suspicion birthX
As longs the laborer for the setting sunK
Watching the lengthening shadows that foretellK3
The time of rest yet day by day returnsW
To the same task again so I endureD2
Wearisome nights and months of burdening woeQ3
I would not alway live this loathed lifeH
Whose days are vanity Soon shall I sleepB2
Low in the dust and when the morning comesW
And thro' its curtaining mists ye seek my faceW
I shall not beC3
-
-
-
Earnest the Shuhite spakeX3
How long shall these thy words like eddying windsW
Fall empty on the earD2
Doth God pervertC3
Justice and judgment If thy way was pureD2
Thy supplication from an upright heartC3
He would awake and make thy latter endC3
More blest than thy beginningX2
For inquireD2
Of ancient times of History's honor'd scrollK3
And of the grey hair'd fathers if our wordsW
Seem light we who were born but yesterdayD2
Ask them and they shall teach thee as the rushY3
Or as the flag forsaken of the podC3
So shall the glory of the hypocriteC3
Fade in its greennessW
Tho' his house may seemS
Awhile to flourish it shall not endureD2
Even tho' he grasp it with despairing strengthZ3
It shall deceive his trust and pass awayD2
As fleets the spider's filmy web BeholdC3
God will not cast away the perfect manK
Nor help the evil doerD2
-
-
-
In low tonesW
Sepulchral and with pain the sufferer spakeX3
I know that this is truth but how can manK
Be just with God How shall he dare contendC3
With Him who stretches out the sky and treadsW
Upon the mountain billows of the seaC3
And sealeth up the starsW
Array'd in strengthZ3
He passeth by me but I see Him notC3
I hear His chariot wheels yet fear to askA4
Where goest ThouW
If I indeed were pureD2
And perfect like the model ye see fitC3
To press upon me with your sharpest wordsW
I would not in mine arrogance ariseW
And reason with Him but all humbly makeX3
Petition to my JudgeB4
If there were oneK
To shield me from His terrors and to standC3
As mediator I might dare to askA4
Why didst Thou give this unrequested boonK
Of life to me unhappy My few daysW
Are swifter than a post As the white sailK3
Fades in the mist as the strong eagle's wingX2
Leaves no receding trace they flee awayD2
They see no goodC3
Hath not Thy mighty handC3
Fashion'd and made this curious form of clayD2
Fenc'd round with bones and sinews and inspiredC3
By a mysterious soul Oh be not sternK
Against Thy creature as the Lion marksW
His destin'd preyD2
Relent and let me takeX3
Comfort a little ere I go the wayD2
Whence I return no more to that far landC3
Of darkness and the dreary shades of deathS3
-
-
-
Scarce had he ceas'd ere Zophar's turbid thoughtsW
Made speed to answerD2
Shall a tide of talkB3
Wash out transgression If thou choose to setC3
The truth at nought must others hold their peaceW
Hast thou not boasted that thy deeds and thoughtsW
Were perfect in the almighty Maker's sightC3
Canst thou by searching find out God BeholdC3
Higher than heaven it is what canst thou doC3
Deeper than deepest hell what canst thou knowQ3
Why wilt thou ignorantly deem thyselfH
Unblamed before HimS
Oh that He would speakM2
And put to shame thine arroganceW
His glanceW
Discerns all wickedness all vain pretenceW
To sanctity and wisdom Were thine heartC3
Rightly prepared and evil put awayD2
From that and from thy house then shouldst thou liftC3
Thy spotless face clear as the noon day sunK
Stedfast and fearless Yea thou shouldst forgetC3
Thy misery as waters that have pastC3
Away foreverD2
Thou shouldst be secureD2
And dig about thee and take root and restC3
While those who scorn thee now with soul abasedC3
Should make their suit unto theeC3
But the eyesW
Of wicked men shall fail and as the groanK
Of him who giveth up the ghost shall beC3
Their frustrate hopeH3
Dejectedly as oneK
Who wearied in a race despairs to reachR3
The destined goal nor yet consents to leaveH
His compeers masters of an unwon fieldC3
Job saidC3
No doubt ye think to have attainedC3
Monopoly of knowledge and with youC3
Wisdom shall die This modesty of creedC3
Befits ye well Yet what have ye alledg'dC3
Unheard before what great discoveries madeC3
Who knoweth not such things as ye have toldC3
Despised am I by those who call'd me friendC3
In prosperous days Like a dim waning lampC4
About to be extinguished am I heldC3
By the dull minds of those who dwell at easeW
Weak reasoners that ye are ye have essay'dC3
To speak for God Suppose ye He doth needC3
Such advocacy whose creative handC3
Holdeth the soul of every living thingX2
And breath of all mankindC3
He breaketh downK
And who can build again Princes and kingsW
Are nothing in his sight Disrobed of powerD2
Ceaseless they wander and He heedeth notC3
Those whom the world have worship'd seem as foolsW
He lifteth up the nations at His willK3
Or sweeps them with his lightest breath awayD2
Like noteless atomsW
Silence is for youC3
The truest wisdom Creatures that ye countC3
Inferior to yourselves who in thin airD2
Spread the light wing or thro' the waters glideC3
Or roam the earth might teach if ye would hearD2
And be instructed by themS
Hold your peaceW
Even tho' He slay me I will trust in HimS
For He is my salvation He aloneK
At whose dread throne no hypocrite shall dareD2
To stand or answerD2
Man of woman bornK
Is of few days and full of miseryC3
Forth like a flower he comes and is cut downK
He fleeth like a shadow What is manK
That God regardeth him The forest treeC3
Fell'd by the woodman may have hope to liveH
And sprout again and thro' the blessed touchD4
Of waters at the root put forth new budsW
And tender branches like a plant But manK
Shorn of his strength doth waste away and dieC3
He giveth up the ghost and where is heC3
As slides the mountain from its heaving baseW
Hurling its masses o'er the startled valeK3
As the rent rock resumes its place no moreD2
As the departed waters leave no traceW
Save the groov'd channels where they held their courseW
Among the fissur'd stones his form of dustC3
With its chang'd countenance is sent awayD2
And all the honors that he sought to leaveH
Behind him to his sons avail him notC3
He ceas'd and Eliphaz rejoin'dC3
A manK
Of wisdom dealeth not in empty wordsW
That like the east wind stirs the unsettled sandsW
To profitless revolt Thou dost decryC3
Our speech and proudly justify thyselfH
Before thy God He to whose searching eyeC3
Heavens' pure immaculate ether seems uncleanK
Ask of tradition ask the white hair'd menK
Much older than thy father since to usW
Thou deign'st no credence Say they not to theeC3
All as with one consent the wicked manK
Travaileth with fruitless pain a dreadful soundC3
Forever in his ears the mustering trampC4
Of hostile legions on the distant cloudC3
A far off echo from the woe to comeS
Such is his lot who sinfully contendsW
Against the just will of the Judging OneK
Lifting his puny arm in rebel prideC3
And rushing like a madman on his doomS
The wealth he may have gathered shall dissolveH
And turn to ashes mid devouring flameS
His branch shall not be green but as the vineK
Casteth her unripe grapes as thro' the leavesW
Of rich and lustrous hue the olive budsW
Untimely strew the ground shall be his trustC3
Who in the contumacy of his prideC3
Would fain deceive both others and himselfH
To whom the Man of UzW
These occult truthsW
If such ye deem them I have heard beforeD2
Oh miserable comforters I tooC3
Stood but your soul in my soul's stead could heapB2
Vain bitter words and shake my head in scornK
But I would study to assuage your painK
And solace shed upon your stricken heartsW
With balm drops of sweet speechR3
Yet as for meC3
I speak and none regard or drooping sitC3
In mournful silence and none heed my woeQ3
They smite me on the cheek reproachfullyK3
And slander me in secret though my causeW
And witness rest with the clear judging HeavenK
My record is on highC3
Oh Thou whose handC3
Hath thus made desolate all my companyC3
And left me a poor childless man beholdC3
They who once felt it pride to call me friendC3
Make of my name a by word which was erstC3
Like harp or tabret to their venal lipE4
Mine eye is dim with grief my wasted browW
Furrow'd with wrinklesW
Soon I go the wayD2
Whence I shall not return The grave my houseW
Is ready for me In its mouldering clayD2
My bed I make and say unto the wormS
Thou art my sisterD2
With unpitying voiceW
Not comprehending Job the Shuhite spakeX3
How long ere thou shalt make an end of wordsW
So profitless and vain Thou dost accountC3
Us vile as beasts But shall the stable earthX
With all its rocks and mountains be removedC3
For thy good pleasureD2
See the light forsakeX3
The wicked man Darkness and lonelinessW
Enshroud his dwelling place His path shall beC3
Mid snares and traps and his own counsel failK3
To guide him safely By the heel the ginK
Shall seize him and the robber's hand prevailK3
To rifle and destroy his treasure hoardC3
Secret misgivings feed upon his strengthZ3
And terrors waste his courage He shall findC3
In his own tabernacle no reposeW
Nor confidence His withering root shall drawW
No nutriment and the unsparing axW
Cut off his branches From a loathing worldC3
He shall be chased away and leave behindC3
No son or nephew to bear up his nameS
Among the people No kind memoriesW
Shall linger round his ashes or refreshF4
The bearts of men They who come after himS
Shall be astonish'd at his doom as theyD2
Who went before him view'd it with affrightC3
Such is the lot of those who know not GodC3
Or wickedly renounce HimS
-
EarnestlyC3
Replied the suffering manK
Ye vex my soulK3
And break it into pieces These ten timesW
Have ye reproach'd me without sense of shameS
Or touch of sympathy If I have err'dC3
As without witness ye essay to proveH
'Tis my concern not yoursW
But yet how vainK
To speak of wrong or plead the cause of truthP3
Before the unjustC3
Can ye not understandC3
God in his wisdom hath afflicted meC3
Ilis hand hath reft away my crown and stripp'dC3
Me of my glory Kindred blood vouchsafesW
No aid or solace in my deep distressW
Estrang'd and far away like statues coldC3
Brethren and kinsfolk stand Familiar friendsW
Frown on me as a stranger They who dwellK3
In my own house and eat my bread despise meC3
I call'd my own tried servant but he gaveH
No answer or regard My maidens train'dC3
For household service to perform my willK3
Count me an alien even with my wifeH
My voice hath lost its power Young children riseW
And push away my feet and mock my wordsW
Yea the best loved most garner'd in my heartC3
Do turn against me as a thing abhorr'dC3
Have pity pity on me oh my friendsW
The hand of God hath smitten meC3
-
I knowQ3
That my Redeemer liveth and shall standC3
At last upon the earth and though in deathS3
Worms shall destroy this body in my fleshF4
Shall I see GodC3

This glorious burst of faithT3
Springing from depths of misery and painK
Awed them a moment like the lightning's flashG4
Cleaving the cloud But gathering strength againK
They sought the conflictC3
Thou who art so wiseW
Hast thou not learn'd how baseless is the joyM
And boasting of the hypocrite His headC3
Up to the heavens in excellence and prideC3
May seem to mount yet shall he swiftly fallK3
Leaving no trace Though still he toils to keepB2
His sin a secret from his fellow menK
Like a sweet stolen morsel hiding itC3
Under his tongue yet shall the veil be rentC3
God's fearful judgments shall make evidentC3
What he hath done in darkness Vipers' tonguesW
And the dire poison of the asp shall beC3
His recompense Terrors shall strike him throughC3
An inward fire of sharp remorse unblownK
By mortal hand shall on his vitals feedC3
And all his strength consume His wealth shall fleetC3
And they who trusted to become his heirsW
Embrace a shadow for his goods shall flowQ3
Away as the false brook forsakes its sandsW
This is the portion of the hypocriteC3
The heritage appointed him by GodC3

To Zophar answered JobZ
Hear ye my speechR3
And when 'tis done mock on Not unto manK
Is my complaint For were it so my heartC3
Would sink in darker depths of hopeless woeQ3
Say ye that earth's 'prosperity' rewardsW
The righteous man Why do the wicked liveH
Grow old and magnify themselves in powerD2
Their offspring flourish round them their abodesW
Are safe from fear Their cattle multiplyC3
And widely o'er the hills and pastures greenK
Wander their healthful herds Forth like a flockL3
They send their little ones with dance and songF3
Tabret and harp They spend their days in wealthN3
And sink to slumber in the quiet graveH
Yet unto God they said Depart from usW
For we desire no knowledge of thy waysW
Why should we serve the Almighty Who is heC3
And what our profit if we pray to HimS
-
Close by these impious ones lies down to sleepB2
One in the strength and glory of his primeS
Whom sorrow never touch'd nor age impair'dC3
And still another wan misfortune's childC3
Nurtur'd in bitterness who never tookD3
His meat with pleasure Side by side they restC3
On Death's oblivious pillow Do ye sayW
Their varied lot below mark'd their desertsW
In retribution justC3
-
-
-
But as for youC3
With eyes so sharp for your own selfish endsW
Who by the wayside ask where'er ye goQ3
Where is the dwelling of the prince and seekM2
Gain more than godliness I know full wellK3
Your deep contempt for one too poor to bribeZ
Your false allegiance and the unkind deviceW
Ye wrongfully imagineK
Will ye teachR3
Knowledge to God Doth He not wisely judgeB4
The highest and reserve the sons of guiltC3
For the destruction that awaiteth themS

In quick rejoinder Eliphaz repliedC3
What is thy fancied goodness in the sightC3
Of the Almighty Is it gain to HimS
If thou art righteous Would it add to HimS
Gladness or glory that thy ways should beC3
What thou call'st perfectC3
Rather turn thine eyesW
Upon the record of thy sins and seeC3
Their countless numberD2
Hast thou taken a pledgeH4
From thy poor brother's hand or reft awayW
The garment from the shivering or withheldC3
Bread from the hungry or the widow sentC3
Empty away not given the weary soulK3
What it implored nor bound the broken armS
Of the forsaken fatherlessW
For thisW
Have snares beset thee and a secret fearD2
Dismay'd thy spirit and a rayless nightC3
Shut over theeC3
Look to the height of heavenK
Above the utmost star Is not God thereD2
Think'st thou that aught can intercept His sightC3
Or bar His righteous judgment He who makesW
The thickest clouds His footstool when He walksW
Upon the circuit of the highest heavensW
Acquaint thyself with Him and be at peaceW
Return to Him and He shall build thee upP2
Take thou His precepts to thine inmost heartC3
That thy lost blessings may revisit theeC3
Put far away thy foster'd sins and shareD2
The swelling flood tide of prosperityC3
Thou shalt have silver at thy will and goldC3
The gold of Ophir in thy path shall lieC3
As stones that pave the brooksW
Make thou thy prayerD2
And pay thy vows and He will hear thy voiceW
And give thee light and thy desires confirmS
For He will save the humble and protectC3
The innocent and still deliver thoseW
Whose hands are pureD2
-
To whom the Man of UzW
-
Oh that I knew where I might find my JudgeB4
That I might press even to His seat and pleadC3
My cause before Him Would He strike me dumbS
With His great power Nay rather would he giveH
Strength to the weakness that would answer HimS
Lo I go forward but He is not thereD2
And backward yet my eyes perceive Him notC3
On the left hand His works surround me stillK3
But He is absent on the right I gazeW
Yet doth He hide HimselfH
But well He knowsW
My way and when the time of trial's o'erD2
And the refining fire hath purg'd the drossW
I shall come forth as gold My feet have keptC3
The path appointed nor from His commandsW
Unduly swerved for I have prized His wordC3
More than my needful foodC3
Yet He performsW
What His wise counsel hath decreed for meC3
Though sometimes sinks my soften'd heart beneathC
The terror of His strokeY
There are who seizeW
With violence whate'er their eyes desireD2
Gorging themselves upon the stolen flockL3
And leaving desolate the rifled hutC3
Of the defenceless Solitary onesW
Hide from their robberies for forth they goQ3
Into the wilderness their prey to huntC3
Like ravening beastsW
There are who watch to slayW
Rising before the dawn or wrapp'd in nightC3
Roaming with stealthy footstep as a thiefH
To smite their victims while the wounded groanK
Struck by their fatal shaftC3
There are who doC3
Such deeds of utter darkness as detestC3
The gaze of day Muffling their face they digI4
Their way to habitations where they leaveH
Shame and dishonorD2
Though He seem to sleepB2
God's eye is on their ways A little whileK3
They wrap themselves in secret infamyC3
Or proudly flourish but as the tall treeC3
Yields in a moment to the wrecking blastC3
As 'neath the sickle falls the crisping cornK
Shall they be swept away and leave no traceW

Bildad the Shuhite rose in act to speakM2
-
Dominion is with God and fear He makesW
Peace in his own high places Dost thou knowQ3
The number of His armies Or on whomS
His light ariseth notC3
How then can manK
Be justified with God or he be pureD2
Born of a woman Lo the cloudless MoonK
And yon unsullied stars are in His sightC3
Dim and impure Can man who is a wormS
Be spotless with his MakerD2
Hark the voiceW
Of the afflicted manK
How dost thou helpJ4
Him that is powerless how sustain the armS
That fails in strength how counsel him who needsW
Wisdom and how declare the righteous truthP3
Just as it isW
To Him who reads the soulK3
Hades is naked and the realms of DeathS3
Have naught to cover them This pendent EarthX
Hangs on his word in gathering clouds he bindsW
The ponderous waters till at his commandC3
They rend their filmy prison Day and nightC3
Await his nod to run their measured courseW
Heaven's pillars and its everlasting gatesW
Tremble at his reproof The cleaving seaC3
And man's defeated pride confess his powerD2
Yet the same Hand that garnisheth the skiesW
Disdaineth not to fashion and sustainK
The crooked serpent But how small a partC3
Of all its works are understood by usW
Dim dwellers in this lowly vestibuleK3
And by the thunders of mysterious powerD2
Still held in aweK4
As the Eternal livesW
Who hath bow'd down my soul as long as breathS3
Inspires this mortal frame these lips shall ne'erD2
Utter deceit nor cast away the wealthN3
Of a good conscience While I live I'll holdC3
Fast mine integrity nor justifyC3
The slanderous charges of a secret guiltC3
Ye bring against meC3
For what is the gainK
Of the base hypocrite when God shall takeX3
Away his perjured soul Yourselves have seenK
How often in this life the wicked tasteC3
Of retribution The oppressor bearsW
Sway for a while but look the downfall comesW
His offspring shall not flourish nor his graveH
Be wet with widow's tearsW
The unjust rich manK
Heapeth up silver for a stranger's handC3
He hoardeth raiment with a miser's greedC3
To robe he knows not who though he himselfH
Had grudg'd to wear it Boastfully he buildsW
A costly mansion to preserve his nameS
Among the people But like the slight boothP3
Brief lodge of summer shall it pass awayW
Terrors without a cause disable himS
And drown his courage Like a driven leafH
Before the whirlwind shall he hasten downK
To a dishonor'd tomb Men shall rejoiceW
And clap their hands and hiss him from his placeW
When he departsW
Surely there is a veinK
For silver and a secret bed for goldC3
Which man discovers Where the iron sleepsW
In darkest chambers of the mine he knowsW
And how the brass is molten But a MindC3
Deeper than his close hidden things exploresW
Searching out all perfectionK
Earth unveilsW
The mystic treasures of her matron breastC3
Bread for her children gems like living flameS
Sapphires whose azure emulates the skiesW
And dust of gold Yet there's a curtain'd pathA3
Which the unfettered denizens of airD2
Have not descried nor even the piercing eyeC3
Of the black vulture seen The lion's whelpsW
In their wide roaming nor their fiercer sireD2
Have never trod itC3
There's a Hand that baresW
The roots of mountains at its will and cutsW
Through rifted rocks a channel where the streamsW
And rivers freely flow an Eye that scansW
Each precious thingX2
But where doth Wisdom dwellK3
And in what curtain'd chamber was the birthX
Of UnderstandingX2
The great Sea upliftsW
Its hand in adjuration and declaresW
'Tis not with me and its unfathom'd deepB2
In subterranean thunders echoing cryC3
No not with meC3
Offer ye not for themS
Silver or Ophir's gold nor think to exchangeL4
Onyx or sapphire or the coral branchM4
Or crystal gem where hides imprison'd lightC3
Nor make ye mention of the precious pearlK3
Or Ethiopian topaz for their priceW
Transcendeth rubies or the dazzling rayW
Of concentrated jewelsW
In what placeW
Are found these wondrous treasures Who will showQ3
Their habitation which alike defiesW
The ken of those who soar or those who delveH
In cells profoundC3
Death and destruction sayW
From their hoarse caverns We have heard their fameS
But know them notC3
Lo He who weighs the windsW
Measures the floods controls the surging seaC3
And points the forked lightnings where to playW
He unto whom all mysteries are plainK
All secrets open all disguises clearD2
Saith unto man the questionerD2
BeholdC3
The fear of God is wisdom and to breakX3
The sway of evil and depart from sinK
Is understandingX2
Anguish wrings my soulK3
As in my hours of musing I restoreD2
The picture of my lost prosperityC3
When round my side my loving children drewC3
And from my happy home my steps were hail'dC3
Where'er I went The fatherless and poorD2
And he who had no helper welcomed meC3
As one to right their wrongs and pluck the spoilK3
From the oppressor's teeth Pale widows raisedC3
The glistening eye of gratitude and theyW
Whose sight was quench'd at my remembered tonesW
Pour'd blessings on me Overflowing wealthN3
Brought me no titles that I held so dearD2
As father of the poor and comforterD2
Of all who mournK
When in the gate I sateC3
The nobles did me honor and the wiseW
Sought counsel of me To my words the youngT2
Gave earnest heed the white hair'd men stood upP2
And princes waited for my speech as waitC3
The fields in summer for the latter rainK
But now the children of base men spring upP2
And push away my feet and make my nameS
A bye word and a mockery which was erstC3
Set to the harp in songF3
Because my wealthN3
God hath resumed they who ne'er dared to claimS
Equality with even the lowest onesW
Who watch'd my flock they whom my menials scornedC3
Dwellers in hovels feeding like the brutesW
On roots and bushes of the wildernessW
Despise me and in mean derision castC3
Marks of abhorrence at the fallen chiefH
Whom erst they fear'dC3
Unpitied I endureD2
Sickness and pain that ope the narrow houseW
Where all the living go My soul dissolvesW
And flows away as water like the owlK3
In lone forgotten cavern I complainK
For all my instruments of music yieldC3
But mournful sounds and from my organ comesW
A sob of weepingX2
I appeal to HimS
Who sees my ways and all my steps doth countC3
If I have walk'd with vanity or wornK
The veil of falsehood or despised to obeyW
The law of duty if I basely prowl'dC3
With evil purpose round my neighbor's doorD2
Or scorn'd my humblest menial's cause to rightC3
When he contended with me and complain'dC3
Framed as he was of the same clay with meC3
By the same Hand Divine or shunn'd to shareD2
Even my last morsel with the hungry poorD2
Or shield the uncovered suppliant with the fleeceW
Of my own cherish'd flockL3
If ere I madeC3
Fine gold my confidence or lifted upP2
My heart in pride because my wealth was greatC3
Or when I saw the glorious King of DayC3
Gladdening all nations and the queenly MoonK
Walking in brightness was enticed to payC3
A secret homage 'twere idolatryC3
Unpardonably greatC3
If I rejoicedC3
In the affliction of mine enemyC3
Or for his hatred breathed a vengeful vowW
When trouble came upon him if I closedC3
The inhospitable door against the footC3
Of stranger or of traveller or withheldC3
Full nutriment from any who abodeC3
Within my tabernacle or refusedC3
Due justice even to my own furrow'd fieldC3
Then let my harvest unto thistles turnK
And rootless weeds o'ertop the beardless grainK
-
-
-
Then ceased the Man of Uz like one o'erspentC3
Feeling the fallacy of argumentC3
With auditors like these his thoughts withdrewC3
Into the shroud of silence and he spakeX3
No more unto them standing fix'd and muteC3
Like statued marbleK3
Then as none repliedC3
A youthful stranger rose and while he stretch'dC3
His hand in act to speak and heavenward raisedC3
His clear unshrinking brow he worthy seem'dC3
To hold the balance of that high debateC3
Still an indignant warmth with energyC3
Of fervid eloquence his lips inspiredC3
-
I said that multitude of days should bringX2
Wisdom to man and so gave earnest heedC3
To every argument And lo not oneK
Of all your speeches have convicted JobZ
Or proved your theory that woes like hisW
Denote a secret guiltC3
I listened stillK3
With that respect which youth doth owe to ageN4
And till ye ceased to speak refrain'd to showQ3
Mine own opinion But there is a breathS3
From the Almighty that gives life to thoughtC3
And in my soul imprison'd utterance burnsW
Like torturing flame So will I give it ventC3
Though I am young in years and ye are oldC3
And should be wise I will not shun to upholdC3
The righteous cause nor will I gloze the wrongF3
With flattering titles lest the kindling wrathA3
Of an offended Maker sweep me henceW
-
Hearken O Job I pray thee to my wordsW
For they are words of truthP3
Thou hast assumedC3
More perfect innocence than appertainsW
To erring man and eager to refuteC3
False accusation hast contemn'd the courseW
Of the All MercifulK3
Why shouldst thou striveH
With Him whose might of wisdom ne'er unveilsW
Its mysteries to man Yet doth He deignK
Such hints and precepts as the docile heartC3
May comprehend Sometimes in vision'd sleepB2
His Spirit hovereth o'er the plastic mindC3
Sealing instruction Or a different voiceW
Its sterner teaching tries His vigor droopsW
Strong pain amid the multitude of bonesW
Doth revel till his soul abhorreth meatC3
His fair flesh wastes and downward to the pitC3
He hourly hastens Holy SympathyC3
May aid to uphold him in its blessed armsW
Kindly interpreting the Will DivineK
With angel tendernessW
But if the GodC3
Whose gracious ear doth hear the sigh of prayerD2
Baptized with dropping tears perceives the cryC3
Of humbled self abasing penitenceW
He casts away the scourge the end is gainedC3
Fresh as a child's the wither'd flesh returnsW
And life and health and joy are his once moreD2
With discipline like this He often triesW
The creatures He hath made to crush the seedsW
Of pride and teach that lowliness of soulK3
Befitting them and pleasing in His sightC3
-
-
-
Oh Man of Uz if thou hast aught to addC3
Unto thy argument I pray thee speakM2
Fain would I justify theeC3
Is it wellK3
To combat Him who hath the right to reignK
Or even to those who fill an earthly throneK
And wear a princely diadem to sayW
Ye are unjustC3
But how much less to HimS
The fountain of all power who heedeth notC3
Earth's vain distinctions nor regards the richO4
More than the poor for all alike are dustC3
And ashes in His sightC3
Is it not meetC3
For those who bear His discipline to sayW
I bow submissive to the chastening HandC3
That smites my inmost soul Oh teach me thatC3
Which through my blindness I have failed to seeC3
For I have sinn'd but will offend no moreD2
Say is it right Oh Job for thee to holdC3
Thyself superior to the All Perfect MindC3
If thou art righteous what giv'st thou to HimS
Who sits above the heavens Can He receiveH
Favor from mortalsW
Open not thy mouthP4
To multiply vain words but rather bowW
Unto the teaching of His works that spreadC3
So silently around His snows descendC3
And make the green Earth hoary Chains of frostC3
Straighten her breadth of waters Dropping rainsW
Refresh her summer thirst or rending cloudsW
Roll in wild deluge o'er her Roaming beastsW
Cower in their dens affrighted while she quakesW
Convuls'd with inward agony or reelsW
Dizzied with flashing firesW
Again she smilesW
In her recovered beauty at His willK3
Maker of all things So He rules the worldC3
With wrath commingling mercy Who may hopeH3
With finite mind to understand His waysW
So excellent in power in wisdom deepB2
In justice terrible respecting noneK
Who pride themselves in fancied wisdomS
HarkQ4
On the discursive speech a whirlwind breaksW
Tornadoes shake the desert thunders rollK3
And from the lightning's startled shrine a voiceW
The voice of the EternalK3
Who is thisW
That darkeneth knowledge by unmeaning wordsW
Gird up thy loins and answerD2
Where wert thouW
When the foundations of the earth were laidC3
Who stretch'd the line and fix'd the corner stoneK
When the bright morning stars together sangR4
And all the hosts that circle round the ThroneK
Shouted for joyM
Whose hand controll'd the seaC3
When it brake forth to whelm the new fram'd worldC3
Who made dark night its cradle and the cloudC3
Its swaddling band commandingX2
HithertoC3
Come but no further At this line of sandC3
Stay thy proud wavesW
Hast thou call'd forth the mornK
From the empurpled chambers of the eastC3
Or bade the trembling day spring know its placeW
Have Orion's depths been open'd to thy viewC3
And hast thou trod his secret floor or seenK
The gates of Death's dark shadeC3
Where doth light dwellK3
And ancient Darkness that with Chaos reign'dC3
Before Creation Dost thou know the pathA3
Unto their house because thou then wert bornK
And is the number of thy days so greatC3
Show me the treasure house of snows UnlockL3
The mighty magazines of hail that waitC3
The war of elementsW
Who hath decreedC3
A water course for embryo fountain springsW
Mark'd out the lightning's path and bade the rainK
O'erlook not in its ministries the wasteC3
And desolate plain but wake the tender herbZ
To cheer the bosom of the wildernessW
Tell me the father of the drops of dewC3
The curdling ice and hoary frost that sealK3
The waters like a stone and change the deepB2
To adamantC3
Bind if thou canst the breathS3
And balmy influence of the PleiadesW
Bring forth Mazzaroth in his time or guideC3
Arcturus with his sonsW
Canst thou annulK3
The fix'd decree that in their spheres detainK
The constellations Will the lightnings goQ3
Forth on thine errands and report to theeC3
As loyal vassalsW
Who in dying clayW
Infused the immortal principle of mindC3
And made them fellow workersW
If thou canstC3
Number the flying clouds and gather backB
Their falling showers when parch'd and cleaving earthX
Implores their charity Wilt hunt the preyW
With the stern forest king or dare invadeC3
The darkened lair where his young lions couchS4
Ravenous with hungerD2
Who the ravens feedsW
When from the parent's nest hurl'd out they cryC3
And all forsaken ask their meat from GodC3
Know'st thou the time when the wild goats endureD2
The mother sorrow how their offspring growQ3
Healthful and strong uncared for and unstall'dC3
Who made the wild ass like the desert freeC3
Scorning the rein and from the city's boundC3
Turning triumphant to the wildernessW
Lead to thy crib the unicorn and bindC3
His unbow'd sinews to the furrowing ploughW
And trust him if thou canst to bring thy seedC3
Home to the garnerD2
Who the radiant plumesW
Gave to the peacock or the winged speedC3
That bears the headlong ostrich far beyondC3
The baffled steed and rider not withheldC3
By the instinctive tenderness that chainsW
The brooding bird she scatters on the sandsW
Her unborn hopes regardless though the footC3
May trampling crush themS
Hast thou given the HorseW
His glorious strength and clothed his arching neckT4
With thunder At the armed host he mocksW
The rattling quiver and the glittering spearD2
Prancing and proud he swalloweth the groundC3
With rage and passionate desire to rushY3
Into the battle At the trumpet's soundC3
And shouting of the captains he exultsW
Drawing the stormy terror with delightC3
Into his fearless spiritC3
Doth the HawkB3
In her migrations counsel ask of TheeC3
Mounts the swift Eagle up at thy commandC3
Making her nest among the star girt cliffsW
And thence undazzled by the vertic sunK
Scanning the molehills of the earth or motesW
That o'er her bosom moveH
Say wilt thou teachR3
Creative Wisdom or contend with HimS
The Almighty ordering all things at His willK3
-
-
-
Then there was silence till the chastened OneK
Murmured as from the dustC3
Lo I am vileK3
What shall I answer thee I lay my handC3
Upon my mouth Once have I dared to speakM2
But would be silent now forevermoreD2
-
Yet still in thunder from the whirlwind's wingX2
Jehovah's voice demandedC3
Wilt thou dareD2
To disannul my judgments and aboveH
Unerring wisdom and unbounded powerD2
Exalt thine ownK
Hast thou an arm like mineK
Array thyself in majesty and lookD3
On all the proud in heart and bring them lowQ3
Yea deck thyself with glory cast abroadC3
The arrows of thine anger and abaseW
The arrogant and send the wicked downK
To his own place sealing his face like stoneK
Deep in the dust for then will I confessW
Thy might and that thine own right hand hath powerD2
To save thyselfH
Hast seen my BehemothU4
Who on the grassy mountains finds his foodC3
And 'neath the willow boughs and reeds disportsW
His monstrous bulkV4
His bones like brazen barsW
His iron sinews cased in fearful strengthZ3
Resist attack Lo when he slakes his thirstC3
The rivers dwindle and he thinks to drawD2
The depths of Jordan dryD2
Wilt cast thy hookD3
And take Leviathan Wilt bind thy yokeY
Upon him as a vassal Will he cringeW4
Unto thy maidensW
See the barbed spearD2
The dart and the habergeon are his scornK
Sling stones are stubble keenest arrows foil'dC3
And from the plaited armor of his scalesW
The glittering sword recoils Where he reclinesW
Who is so daring as to rouse him upP2
With his cold stony heart and breath of flameS
Or to the cavern of his gaping jawsW
Thick set with teeth draw nearD2
The Hand aloneK
That made him can subdue his baleful mightC3
-
-
-
Jehovah ceas'd for the Omniscient EyeD2
That scans the inmost thought of man discern'dC3
Its work completed in that lowlinessW
Of deep humility which fits the soulK3
For heavenly intercourse and renovatesW
The blessed image of obedient loveH
That Eden forfeitedC3
Out of the depthsW
Of true contrition sigh'd a trembling toneK
In utter abnegationK
I repentC3
In dust and ashes I abhor myselfH
Thus the returning prodigal who criesW
Unclothed and empty Father I have sinn'dC3
And am not worthy to be called thy sonK
Finds full forgiveness and a free embraceW
While the best robe his shrinking form enfoldsW
-
But with this self abasement toward his GodC3
Job mingled tenderest regard for manK
No longer with indignant warmth he stroveH
Against his false accusers or retainedC3
Rankling remembrance of the enmityC3
That vexed his wounded soulK3
With earnest prayersW
And offerings he implored offended HeavenK
To grant forgiveness to those erring friendsW
Paying with love the alienated courseW
Of their misguided mindsW
Heaven heard his voiceW
And with that intercession sweet return'dC3
The sunbeams of his lost prosperityC3
Back came his buried joys They had no powerD2
To harm a soul subdued The refluent tideC3
Of wealth swept o'er him On his many hillsW
Gathered the herds and o'er his pastures greenK
Sported the playful lambs The tuneful voiceW
Of children fill'd his desolate home with joyM
And round his household board their beauty gleam'dC3
Making his spirit gladC3
So full of daysW
While twice our span of threescore years and tenK
Mark'd out its silvery chronicle of moonsW
Still to his knee his children's children climb'dC3
To hear the wisdom he had learned of GodC3
Through the strong teaching both of joy and woeQ3
-
-
-
Nor had this sublunary scene aloneK
Witness'd his trial Doubt ye not that formsW
To earth invisible were hovering nearD2
With the sublime solicitude of HeavenK
For he the bold bad Spirit in his vaunting prideC3
Of impious revolt had dared to sayW
Unto the King of KingsW
Stretch forth thy handC3
And take away all that he hath and JobZ
Will curse Thee to Thy faceW
Methinks we hearD2
An echo of angelic harmonyC3
From that blest choir who struck their harps with joyM
That from the Tempter's ordeal he had risenK
An unhurt victor Round the Throne they pour'dC3
Their gratulations that the born of clayW
Tho' by that mystery bow'd which ever veilsW
The inscrutable counsels of the All Perfect OneK
Might with the chieftain of the Rebel HostC3
Cope unsubdued and heavenward hold his wayW
