-
-
Both gone Both smitten in their manly primeB
Yet the fair transcript of their virtues hereC
And treasured memories of their boyhood's timeB
Allay the anguish of affection's tearD
-
One hath his rest amid the sacred shadeE
Whose turf reveals the mourner's frequent treadF
And one beneath the unfathomed deep is laidE
To slumber till the sea restores her deadF
-
The childless parents weep their broken trustG
Hope's fountain failing at its cherish'd springsH
And widow'd sorrow shrouds herself in dustG
While one lone flowret to her bosom clingsH
-
Yet no blind chance this saddening change hath wroughtI
No dark misrule this mortal life attendsJ
A Heavenly Father's never erring thoughtI
Commingles with the discipline He sendsJ
-
Not for His reasons let us dare to askK
His secret counsels not aspire to readF
But faithful bow to each allotted taskK
And make His will our solace and our creedL
