Died at Astoria New York April thA
-
-
Upon his suffering couch he layB
Whose noble form and mindC
The stress of fourscore years had triedD
Yet left a charm behindC
The charm of heaven born happinessE
Whose beauty may not fadeF
The charm of unimpair'd regardG
For all whom God had madeF
-
Upon his suffering couch he layB
While sadly gathering thereH
Were loved and loving ones who madeF
That honored life their careH
And 'mid the group a daughter's voiceI
Of wondrous sweetness readJ
Brief portions from the Book DivineK
As his dictation ledJ
-
Bow down thine ear Most MercifulL
Oh hearken while I speakM
Now in my time of utmost needN
To Thee alone I seekM
Shew me some token Lord for goodO
Before I pass awayB
For Thou hast ever been my strengthP
My comforter and stayB
-
So when that precious breath went forthQ
Her gentle hand was laidF
To close those pale and trembling lidsR
In slumber's dreamless shadeF
And then the pure and sacred flowersS
She for his burial twinedC
And bade her struggling grief be stillT
Till the last rite declinedC
-
Through every trial change of lifeU
Had reign'd within her breastV
A holy zeal of filial loveW
That could not be represtV
Its memories like a music strainX
Still in that casket swellY
And wake perchance some fond responseZ
Where watching angels dwellY
