- | |
- | |
It was a sad and lovely sight | B |
They call'd us to behold | C |
That infant forehead high and fair | D |
Those beauteous features sculptured rare | D |
Yet breathless all and cold | C |
- | |
Heard it in dreams an angel voice | E |
Soft as the zephyr's tone | F |
The yearning of a Mother mild | G |
To clasp once more her three months' child | G |
But a few days her own | F |
- | |
Just a few days of wasting pain | H |
She linger'd by its side | I |
And then consign'd to stranger arms | J |
The frail unfolding of the charms | J |
She would have watch'd with pride | I |
- | |
Yet happy babe to reach a home | K |
Beyond all sorrowing cares | L |
Where none a Mother's loss can moan | F |
Or seek for bread and find a stone | F |
Or fall in fatal snares | L |
- | |
Thrice happy to have pass'd away | M |
Ere Time's sore ills invade | N |
From fragrant buds that drooping shed | O |
Their life sigh o'er thy coffin bed | O |
To flowers that never fade | N |
