The great and good How startling is the knell	B
That tells he is but dust	C
The echo comes	D
From where Virginia's health reviving springs	E
Make many whole But waiting there for him	F
The dark winged angel who doth come but once	G
Troubled the waters and his latest breath	H
Fled where his first was drawn	I
That noble brow	J
So mark'd with intellect so clear with truth	K
Grave in its goodness in its love serene	L
Will it be seen no more	M
That earnest voice	N
Filling the Temple arch so gloriously	O
With themes of import to the undying soul	P
Enforced by power of fervid eloquence	G
Is it forever mute	Q
That mind so rich	R
With varied learning and with classic lore	M
Studious progressive affluent profound	S
That feeling heart instinct with sympathy	O
For the world's family of grief and pain	T
The dark in feature or the lost in sin	U
Say are their treasures lost	V
No on the page	W
Of many a tome traced by his tireless pen	X
They live and brighten for a race to come	Y
Prompting the wise cheering the sorrowful	Z
And for the little children whom he loved	A2
Meting out fitting words like dewy pearls	B2
Glittering along their path	C2
His chief delight	D2
Was in his Master's work How well performed	E2
Speak ye whose feet upon Salvation's rock	F2
Were planted through his prayers His zeal involved	G2
No element of self but hand in hand	H2
Walk'd with humility He needeth not	I2
Praise from our mortal lips The monuments	J2
Of bronze or marble what are they to him	F
Who hath his firm abode above the stars	K2

Yet may the people mourn may freshly keep	L2
The transcript of his life nor wrongly ask	M2
When shall we look upon his like again	X
