The great and good How startling is the knellB
That tells he is but dustC
The echo comesD
From where Virginia's health reviving springsE
Make many whole But waiting there for himF
The dark winged angel who doth come but onceG
Troubled the waters and his latest breathH
Fled where his first was drawnI
That noble browJ
So mark'd with intellect so clear with truthK
Grave in its goodness in its love sereneL
Will it be seen no moreM
That earnest voiceN
Filling the Temple arch so gloriouslyO
With themes of import to the undying soulP
Enforced by power of fervid eloquenceG
Is it forever muteQ
That mind so richR
With varied learning and with classic loreM
Studious progressive affluent profoundS
That feeling heart instinct with sympathyO
For the world's family of grief and painT
The dark in feature or the lost in sinU
Say are their treasures lostV
No on the pageW
Of many a tome traced by his tireless penX
They live and brighten for a race to comeY
Prompting the wise cheering the sorrowfulZ
And for the little children whom he lovedA2
Meting out fitting words like dewy pearlsB2
Glittering along their pathC2
His chief delightD2
Was in his Master's work How well performedE2
Speak ye whose feet upon Salvation's rockF2
Were planted through his prayers His zeal involvedG2
No element of self but hand in handH2
Walk'd with humility He needeth notI2
Praise from our mortal lips The monumentsJ2
Of bronze or marble what are they to himF
Who hath his firm abode above the starsK2
-
Yet may the people mourn may freshly keepL2
The transcript of his life nor wrongly askM2
When shall we look upon his like againX
