-
-
Frail stranger at the gate of lifeB
Too weak to grasp its keyC
O'er whom the Sun on car of goldD
Hath but a few times risen and roll'dD
Unnoticed still by theeC
-
To whom the toil of breath is newE
In this our vale of timeF
Whose feet are yet unskill'd to treadG
The grassy carpet round thee spreadG
At the soft vernal primeF
-
Deep sympathy and pitying careH
Regard thy helpless moanI
And 'neath thy forehead arching highJ
Methinks the brightly opening eyeJ
Doth search for something goneK
-
Yon slumberer 'mid the snowy flowersL
With young unfrosted hairH
Awakes not at the mournful soundM
Of bird like voices murmuring roundM
Why sleeps our Mother thereH
-
Hers was that sunshine of the heartN
Which Home's fair region cheer'dO
Hers the upright unselfish aimP
The fond response to duty's claimP
The faith that never fear'dO
-
Oh mystery brooding oft so darkQ
O'er this our path belowR
Not ours with wild repining sighJ
To ask the wherefore or the whyJ
But drink our cup of woeR
-
So in her shrouded beauty coldD
Yield to the earth its ownI
Assured that Heaven will guard the trustS
Of that which may not turn to dustS
But dwells beside the ThroneI
