Our buds have faded winter's frigid breath | B |
Sigh'd o'er their bosoms and they fell away | C |
So in these household bowers the ice of death | B |
Bids rose and lily ere their prime decay | C |
And see a Passion Flower from tropic skies | D |
Beneath our drifted snows not without requiem lies | D |
- | |
A brilliant daughter of the Cuban vales | E |
Of generous mind impulsive strong and high | F |
Twined the home tendril where our northern gales | E |
Sweep grove and forest with their minstrelsy | E |
Labor'd for classic lore with studious part | G |
And planted friendship's germ in many an answering heart | G |
- | |
Her filial piety intensely warm | H |
Whose gushing tenderness no limit knew | I |
Clasp'd day and night a Mother's wasted form | H |
And o'er her failing powers protection threw | I |
Cheering the darken'd soul with comfort sweet | J |
And girding it anew life's latest pang to meet | J |
- | |
Then came the sacred vow for good or ill | K |
The life long study of another's joy | L |
The raptur'd and unutterable thrill | K |
With which a mother greets her first born boy | L |
The climax of those hopes and duties dear | M |
Which Heaven's unerring hand accords to Woman's sphere | M |
- | |
And then the scene was ended and she found | N |
What here her ardent nature vainly sought | O |
Unwithering flowers and music's tuneful sound | N |
Without a shadow or discordant thought | O |
And entered through a dear Redeemer's love | P |
The never changing clime of perfect rest above | P |
