Died at Hartford Sunday May thA
-
-
She found a painless avenue to makeB
The great transition from a world of careC
To one of restD
It was the Sabbath dayE
And beautiful with smile of vernal sunF
And the up springing fragrance from the earthG
With all that soothing quietude which linksH
The consecrated season unto HimI
Who bade the creatures He had made revereJ
And keep it holyK
From her fair abodeL
Lovely with early flowers she took her wayE
The second time unto the House of GodM
And side by side with her life's chosen friendN
Walk'd cheerfully Within those hallow'd courtsO
Where holds the soul communion with its GodM
She listening sateP
But then she lean'd her headQ
Upon her husband's shoulder and unmark'dR
By one distorted feature by the lossS
Or blanching of the rose tint on her cheekT
Rose to more perfect worshipU
It might seemV
As if a sacred temple purifiedW
By prayers and praises were a place sublimeX
Of fitting sanctity wherein to hearY
The inexpressive call that summonethG
The ready spirit upwardZ
But the changeA2
In her delightful home what words can tellB2
The shock and contrast when a mind so skill'dC2
With order and efficiency to fillD2
Each post of woman's duty and of loveE2
Vanished from all its daily ministriesF2
And the lone daughter found the guiding voiceG2
Silent forevermoreY
Her's was the heartH2
For an unswerving friendship warm and trueY
And self forgetful her's the liberal handI2
To those who pine in cells of povertyK
The knowledge of their state the will to aidJ2
The thought that cared for them the zeal that blestD
-
Hence tears o'er rugged cheeks fell fast for herY
And the old white hair'd pensioner knelt downK2
Beside her lifeless clay and cross'd himselfL2
And pour'd his desolate prayer for her kind heartH2
Saw in the creed of varying sects no barY
To charity but in their time of needM2
Held all as brethrenF
'Twas a pleasant spotN2
Amid fresh verdure where they laid her downK2
While the young plants that o'er a daughter's graveO2
Took summer rooting seemed in haste to reachP2
Forth their incipient roots and tendrils greenQ2
To broider her turf pillowR2
Sleep in peaceS2
Ye whom the ties of nature closely boundT2
And death disparted for a little whileU2
Mother and gentle daughter sleep in peaceS2
Your forms engraven deep on loving heartsV2
As with a diamond's point till memory fadeJ2
