Rhyme Scheme: A BCDEDDDF GHDAIJKLMDNODAA DPDDQDDRDSTDUDFN TVW XYA

Wife of Govenor ELLSWORTH and daughter of Noah Webster LL D died at Hartford August dA
-
-
Not with the common forms of funeral griefB
We mourn for her who in the tomb this dayC
Taketh her narrow couch For we have needD
Of such example as she set us hereE
The sphere of christian duty beautifiedD
By gifts of intellect and taste refinedD
A precious picture set in frame of goldD
And hung on highF
-
Hers was a life that boreG
The test of scrutiny and they who sawH
Its inner ministration day by dayD
Bore fullest witness to its symmetryA
Its delicate tissues and unwavering crownI
Of piety A heritage of fameJ
And the rich culture of her early yearsK
Wrought no contempt for woman's household careL
But gave it dignity Order was hersM
And system and an industry that weighedD
The priceless value of each fleeting hourN
Hers was a charm of manner felt by allO
A reference for authorities that markedD
The olden time and that true courtesyA
Which made the aged happyA
-
Scarce it seemedD
That she was of their number or the linksP
Of threescore years and ten indeed had woundD
Their coil around her with such warmth the heartD
And cloudless mind retained their energiesQ
Beauty and grace were with her to the lastD
And fascination that withheld the guestD
Beyond the allotted timeR
More would we sayD
But her affections 'tis not ours to touchS
In lays so weak He of their worth might tellT
Whose dearest hopes so long with hers entwinedD
And they who shared the intense maternal loveU
That knew no pause of effort no decayD
No weariness but glazed the dying eyeF
With heaven born lustreN
-
So we bid farewellT
Friend and Exemplar we who tread so closeV
In thine unechoing footstepsW
-
Be thy faithX
As strong for us when we the bridge shall passY
To the grand portal of EternityA
