The knot of crape upon yon stately doorB
And sadness brooding o'er the sun bright hallsC
What do they signifyD
Death hath been thereE
Where truth and goodness hand in hand with loveF
Walk'd for so many yearsG
Death hath been thereE
To do mid flowing tears his mighty workH
Extinguishing the tyranny of painI
And taking the immortal essence homeJ
Where it would beK
Yet is there left behindL
A transcript that we cherish and a chasmM
We have no power to fill Almost it seemsN
That we beheld him still with quiet stepO
Moving among us saintly and sereneP
Clear sighted upright held in high regardQ
Yet meekly unambitious seeking noughtQ
Of windy honor from the mouth of menR
But with the Gospel's perfect code contentQ
Breathing good will to allS
Freely his wealthT
Wrought blessed channels mid the sons of needQ
Lending Philanthropy and PietyQ
A stronger impulse in their mission courseU
To ameliorate and saveV
-
So thus intentQ
On higher deeds and aims than earth suppliesW
An adept in that true philosophyQ
Learnt only in Christ's school he calmly wentQ
Unto his Master and the Class aboveF
