Thine earnest life is over sainted FriendB
And hush'd the teaching voice that gladly pour'dC
Knowledge and goodness o'er the plastic mindD
Full many a pupil of thy varied loreE
Amid thine own New England's elm crowned valesF
Holds thee in tenderness of grateful thoughtG
And far away in the broad featured westH
Where the strong Sire of waters robes in greenI

Said we thy life was o'erQ

Here the faint star and there the unsetting sunU
Here the scant preface there the open BookV
Where angels read foreverQ

Here on the threshold the dim vestibuleW
Thou with a faithful hand didst toil to tuneX
That harp of praise within the unfolding heartY
Which 'neath the temple arch not made with handsZ
Swells the full anthem of EternityP
