Widow of the late CALEB POND Esq died at Hartford February th agedA

-
Would any think who marked the smileB
On yon untroubled faceC
That threescore years and ten had fledD
Without a wrinkling traceC
-
Yet age doth sometimes skill to guardE
The beauty of its primeF
And hold a quenchless lamp aboveG
The water floods of timeF
-
And she for whom we mourn maintainedH
Through every change and careI
Those hallowed virtues of the soulJ
That keep the features fairI
-
They raised a little child to lookK
Into the coffin deepL
Who dream'd the lovely lady layM
But in a transient sleepL
-
And gazed upon the face of deathN
With eye of tranquil rayM
Well pleased as with the snowy flowersO
That on her bosom layM
-
Then on the sad procession movedP
And mid funereal gloomQ
The only son was there to layM
His mother in the tombQ
-
Oh memories of an only childR
How strong and rich ye areS
A wealth of concentrated loveG
That none beside can shareI
-
And hence the filial grief that swellsT
When breaks its latest tieU
Flows onward with a fuller tideV
Than meets the common eyeU
-
With voice of holy prayer she pass'dW
Forth from her pleasant doorX
Where tender recollections dwellY
Though she returns no moreX
-
Even so the pure and pious riseZ
From tents of pain and woeA2
But leave a precious transcript hereB2
To guide us where they goA2
