Rhyme Scheme: A BCDAAAEAFGH AIJKLMNAAAO PQARSLTAUWidow of the late ANSON G PHELPS Esq died at New York April th aged | A |

- | |
When the good mother dieth and the home | B |
So long made happy by her boundless love | C |
Is desolate and empty there are tears | D |
Of filial anguish not to be represt | A |
And when the many friends who at her side | A |
Sought social sympathy and counsel sweet | A |
Or the sad poor who for their Saviour's sake | E |
Found bountiful relief and kind regard | A |
Stand at that altered threshold and perceive | F |
Faces of strangers from her casement look | G |
There is a pang not to be told in words | H |
- | |
Yet when the christian having well discharged | A |
A life long duty riseth where no sin | I |
Or possibility of pain or death | J |
May follow should there not be praise to Him | K |
Who gives such victory | L |
Thus it is even now | M |
Tears with the triumph strain | N |
For we are made | A |
Of flesh as well as spirit and are taught | A |
By Joy and Sorrow walking side by side | A |
And with strong contrast deepening truths divine | O |
- | |
But unto thee dear friend whose breath was prayer | P |
And o'er whose mortal sickness hovering Faith | Q |
Shed heaven's content there was no further need | A |
Of tutelage like that by which we learn | R |
Too slow perchance with vacillating minds | S |
What the disciples of our Lord should be | L |
For when the subjugation to God's will | T |
Is perfect and affliction all disarmed | A |
Is not life's lesson done | U |
