In Memoriam. - Madam Hannah Lathrop, Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BAC DAAEAAFGAHAFIFJKAAAL AFHFMNOPQAARAGF SFAT

Died in Norwich Connecticut January th agedA
-
-
Had I an artist's pencil I might sketchB
Her as she was in her young matronhoodA
Graceful and dignified serene and fairC
-
I well remember when at Sabbath mornD
With pious zeal the rural church she soughtA
Our rural church by rocks o'er canopiedA
Where with her stately husband and their groupE
Of younglings bright each in the accustom'd seatA
How many a glance was toward her beauty bentA
AdmiringlyF
In those primeval daysG
The aristocracy that won respectA
Sprang not from wealth alone but laid its baseH
In goodness and in virtue Thus she heldA
Her healthful influence in societyF
Without gainsaying voiceI
The polityF
Of woman's realm sweet home those inner caresJ
And countless details that promote its peaceK
Prosperity and order were not deem'dA
Beneath the highest then nor wholly leftA
To hireling hands This science she upheldA
And with her circle of accomplishmentsL
And charms so mingled it that all combinedA
HarmoniouslyF
That energy and graceH
So often deem'd the exclusive propertyF
Of youth's fresh season or of vigorous primeM
She brought to Age an unencumbered dowerN
Making the gift of being beautifulO
Even beyond ninety yearsP
And though the changeQ
Of mortal life dispers'd her cherish'd bandA
And some had gone their own fair nests to buildA
And some arisen to mansions in the skiesR
Alone yet undismay'd her post she keptA
Guiding a household in the same good waysG
Of order and of hospitalityF
-
So when with mild decline the sunset cameS
Her powers still unimpair'd all willinglyF
As a confiding and obedient childA
Goes to its father's house she went aboveT
