In Memoriam. - Madam Hannah Lathrop, Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: A BAC DAAEAAFGAHAFIFJKAAAL AFHFMNOPQAARAGF SFATDied in Norwich Connecticut January th aged | A |
- | |
- | |
Had I an artist's pencil I might sketch | B |
Her as she was in her young matronhood | A |
Graceful and dignified serene and fair | C |
- | |
I well remember when at Sabbath morn | D |
With pious zeal the rural church she sought | A |
Our rural church by rocks o'er canopied | A |
Where with her stately husband and their group | E |
Of younglings bright each in the accustom'd seat | A |
How many a glance was toward her beauty bent | A |
Admiringly | F |
In those primeval days | G |
The aristocracy that won respect | A |
Sprang not from wealth alone but laid its base | H |
In goodness and in virtue Thus she held | A |
Her healthful influence in society | F |
Without gainsaying voice | I |
The polity | F |
Of woman's realm sweet home those inner cares | J |
And countless details that promote its peace | K |
Prosperity and order were not deem'd | A |
Beneath the highest then nor wholly left | A |
To hireling hands This science she upheld | A |
And with her circle of accomplishments | L |
And charms so mingled it that all combined | A |
Harmoniously | F |
That energy and grace | H |
So often deem'd the exclusive property | F |
Of youth's fresh season or of vigorous prime | M |
She brought to Age an unencumbered dower | N |
Making the gift of being beautiful | O |
Even beyond ninety years | P |
And though the change | Q |
Of mortal life dispers'd her cherish'd band | A |
And some had gone their own fair nests to build | A |
And some arisen to mansions in the skies | R |
Alone yet undismay'd her post she kept | A |
Guiding a household in the same good ways | G |
Of order and of hospitality | F |
- | |
So when with mild decline the sunset came | S |
Her powers still unimpair'd all willingly | F |
As a confiding and obedient child | A |
Goes to its father's house she went above | T |
