'Tis not for pen and inkB
Or the weak measures of the muse to giveC
Fit transcript of his virtues who hath risenD
Up from our midst this dayE
-
And yet 'twere sadF
If such example were allow'd to fleetG
Without abiding trace for those behindH
To stand on earth's high places in the garbI
Of Christian meekness yet to comprehendJ
And track the tortuous policies of guileK
With upright aim and heart immaculateL
To pass just sentence on the wiles of fraudM
And deeds of wickedness yet freshly keepN
The fountain of good will to all mankindH
To mark for more than fourscore years a lineO
Of light without a mist are victoriesP
Not oft achiev'd by frail humanityQ
Yet were they hisR
Of charities that knewS
No stint or boundary save the woes of manT
He wish'd no mention made But doubt ye notU
Their record is aboveV
Without the taxW
That age doth levy on the eye or earX
Movement of limbs or social sympathiesP
In sweet retirement of domestic joyY
His calm unshadow'd pilgrimage was closedZ
By an unsighing transitL
-
Our first wintry mornA2
Lifted its Sabbath face and saw him sitL
All reverent at the table of his LordB2
And heard that kindly modulated voiceC2
Teaching Heaven's precepts to a youthful classD2
Which erst with statesman's eloquence controll'dE2
A different audience The next holy dayE
Wondering beheld his place at church unfill'dF2
And found him drooping in his peaceful homeG2
Guarded by tenderest loveV
-
But on the thirdH2
While the faint dawn was struggling to o'ercomeG2
The lingering splendors of a full orb'd moonI2
The curtains of his tent were gently raisedJ2
And he had gone gone mourn'd by every heartK2
Among the people They had seen in himG2
The truth personified and felt the worthL2
Of such a MentorM2
-
'Twere impietyK2
To let the harp of praise in silence lieN2
We who beheld so beautiful a lifeO2
Complete its perfect circle Praise to HimG2
Who gave him power in Christ's dear name to passD2
Unharm'd the dangerous citadel of timeG2
Unsullied o'er its countless snares to riseP2
From earthly care to rest from war to peaceQ2
From chance and change to everlasting blissR2
Give praise to GodK2
