Died at Hartford July th agedA
-
-
It is not meet the good and justB
Oblivious pass awayC
And leave no record for their raceD
Except a dim and fading traceD
The memory of a dayC
-
We need the annal of their courseE
Their pattern for a guideF
Their armor that temptation quell'dG
The beacon light that forth they heldG
O'er Time's delusive tideF
-
Within the House of God I sateH
At Summer's morning rayC
And sadly mark'd a vacant seatI
Where erst in storm or cold or heatI
While lustrums held their wayC
-
Was ever seen with reverent airJ
Intent on hallow'd loreK
A forehead edg'd with silver hairJ
A manly form bow'd low in prayerJ
They greet our eyes no moreK
-
And where Philanthropy commandsL
Her lighted lamp to burnM
And youthful feet inured to strayC
Are wisely warn'd to duty's wayC
Repentant to returnM
-
He with a faith that never fail'dN
Its first inception blestO
And year by year with zeal untiredO
Wise counsel lent new hopes inspiredO
And righteous precepts prestO
-
They did him honor at his graveP
Those men of mystic signQ
Whose ancient symbols bright and fairJ
The Book the Level and the SquareJ
Betoken truth benignQ
-
All do him honor who regardO
Integrity sincereR
But they who knew his virtues bestO
While fond remembrance rules the breastO
Will hold his image dearR
