-
Death's shafts fly thick and love a noble markB
And one hath fallen who bore upon his shieldC
The name and lineage of an honor'd raceD
Who gave us rulers in those ancient daysE
Where truth stood first and gain was left behindF
-
His was the type of character that makesG
Republics strong unstain'd fidelityH
A dignity of mind that mark'd unmov'dI
The unsought honors clustering round his pathJ
And chang'd them into duties With firm stepK
On the high places of the earth he walk'dL
Serving his Country not to share her spoilsM
Nor pamper with exciting eloquenceN
A parasite ambitionO
With clear eyeP
And cautious speech and judgment never warp'dQ
By fancy or enthusiasm he pursuedR
An even upright course His bounties soughtS
Unostentatious channels and he lovedT
To help the young who strove to help themselvesU
Aiding their oar against opposing tidesV
Into the smooth broad watersW
Thus flow'd onX
His almost fourscore years levying slight taxY
On form or mind while self forgetful stillZ
He rose to prop the sad or gird the weakA2
-
Yet when at last in deep repose he layB2
His classic features and unfurrow'd browC2
Wearing the symmetry of earlier daysE
Which Death as if relenting render'd backD2
In transitory gleam 'twas sweet to hearE2
His aged Pastor at the coffin sideF2
Bearing full tribute to his pietyH
So many lustrums that consistent faithG2
Which nerv'd his journey and had led him homeH2
Home Yes Give thanks ye who still travel onX
Oft startled as some pilgrim from your sideF2
Falls through the arches of Time's broken bridgeI2
Without a warning and is seen no moreJ2
Give thanks that he is safe at home in heavenO

Back to the grave from whence ye scarce have turn'dK2
Break up the clods on which the dews of nightL2
But twice had rested Lo another comesM2
She who for many years had garner'd upN2
Her heart's chief strength in him finding his loveO2
Armor and solace in all weal or woeP2
Seem'd the world poor without him that she madeQ2
Such haste to join him in the spirit landR2
Through the dark valley of the shade of deathS2
Treading so close behind him Scarce his lipT2
Learn'd the new song of heaven before she roseU2
To join the enraptur'd strain Her earthly termV2
Of fair and faithful duty well perform'dW2
In fear of God and true good will to manX2
How blessed thus to enter perfect restY2
Where is no shadow of infirmityH
Nor fear of change but happy souls uniteL2
In high ascriptions to redeeming LoveO2

-
And thou sole daughter of their house and heartZ2
Leading thy mournful little ones to lookA3
Into the open and insatiate tombB3
With what a rushing tide thy sorrows cameC3
The sudden smiting in his glorious primeD3
Of him who held the key of all thy joysE3
The fair child following him the noble FriendF3
Who watch'd thee with parental pride and nowC2
Father and Mother have forsaken theeH
The lessons of a life long pilgrimageG3
Thou hast achiev'd while yet a few brief moonsH3
With waning finger as in mockery wroteI3
Of treasur'd hopes more fleeting than their ownJ3
-
But mays't thou from these sterner teachings gainK3
A higher seat where no o'ershadowing cloudL3
Veileth the purpose of God's disciplineO
And mid their glad embrace the gone beforeJ2
The re united ne'er to part beholdM3
The teaching of no bitter precept lostN3
Nor tear sown seed fail of its harvest crownO3
