One saintly man the less to teach us howB
Wisely to live one blest example moreC
To teach us how to dieD
Fourscore and sevenE
Swept not the beauty of his brow awayF
Nor quell'd his voice of music nor impair'dG
The social feeling that through all his lifeH
Ran like a thread of goldI
In filial armsJ
Close wrapp'd with watchful tenderness he trodK
Jordan's cold brinkL
The world was beautifulM
But Christ's dear love so wrought within his heartN
That to depart seem'd betterO
Many a yearP
He lent his influence to the church he lovedQ
For unity and peace and countless gemsR
Dropp'd from his lips when the last sickness cameS
To fortify young pilgrims in the courseT
That leads to glory and eternal lifeH
-
As the frail flesh grew weak the soul look'd forthU
With added brightness thro' the clear dark eyeD
As though it saw unutterable thingsV
Or heard the welcome of beloved onesW
Who went to rest before himX
So with smilesY
And prayers and holy hymns and loving wordsZ
He laid the burden of the body downA2
And slept in JesusB2
