Died at Hartford on Friday morning January thA
-
-
And hath he fallen whom late we sawB
In manly vigor boldC
That stately form that noble faceD
Shall we no more beholdC
Not now of the renown we speakE
That gathers round his nameF
For other climes beside our ownG
Bear witness to his fameF
-
Nor of the high inventive powerH
That stretched from zone to zoneG
And 'neath the pathless ocean wroughtI
For these to all are knownG
Nor of the love his liberal soulJ
His native City boreK
For she hath monuments of thisL
Till memory is no moreK
-
Nor of the self reliant forceM
By which his way he toldC
Nor of the Midas touch that turn'dN
All enterprise to goldC
And made the indignant River yieldO
Unto the ozier'd plainP
For these would ask a wider rangeQ
Than waits the lyric strainP
-
We choose those unobtrusive traitsR
That dawn'd with influence mildS
When in his noble Mother's armsT
We saw the noble childS
And noted mid the changeful scenesU
Of boyhood's sport or strifeV
That quiet firm and ruling mindW
Which marked advancing lifeV
-
So onward as he held his courseM
Through hardship to renownX
He kept fresh sympathy for thoseY
Who cope with fortune's frownX
The kind regard for honest toilZ
The joy to see it riseA2
The fearless truth that never soughtI
His frailties to disguiseA2
-
The lofty mind that all aloneG
Gigantic plans sustain'dB2
Yet turned unboastfully awayC2
From fame and honors gainedB2
The tender love for her who blestD2
His home with angel careE2
And for the infant buds that roseY
In opening beauty fairE2
-
Deep in the heart whence flows this layC2
Is many a grateful traceD
Of friendship's warm and earnest deedF2
Which nought can e'er replaceD
For in the glory of his primeG2
The pulse forsakes his breastD2
And by his buried little onesH2
He lays him down to restD2
-
And thousand stand with drooping headI2
Beside his open graveJ2
To whose industrious faithful handsK2
The daily bread he gaveJ2
The daily bread that wife and babeL2
Or aged parent cheer'dM2
Beneath the pleasant cottage roofsN2
Which he for them had rear'dM2
-
There's mourning in the princely hallsO2
So late with gladness gayC2
A tear within the heart of loveP2
That will not dry awayC2
A sense of loss on all aroundQ2
A sigh of grief and painP
The like of him we lose to dayC2
We ne'er shall see againR2
