The Prisoner Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHIH JFJF DKDK LELE MNMN

I lash and writhe against my prison barsA
And watch with sullen eyes the gaping crowdB
Give me my freedom and the burning starsA
The hollow sky and crags of moonlit cloudB
-
Once I might range across the trackless plainC
And roar with joy until the desert airD
And wide horizons echoed it amainC
I feared no foe for I was monarch thereD
-
I saw my shadow on the parching sandE
When the hot sun had kissed the mountain's rimF
And when the moon rose o'er long wastes of landE
I sought my prey by some still river's brimF
-
And with me my fierce love my tawny mateG
Meet mother of strong cubs meet lion's brideH
We made our lair in regions desolateI
The solitude of wildernesses wideH
-
They slew her and I watched the life blood flowJ
From her torn flank and her proud eyes grow dimF
I howled her dirge above her while the lowJ
Red moon clomb up the black horizon's rimF
-
Me they entrapped cowards They did not dareD
To fight as brave men do without disguiseK
And face my unleashed rage The hidden snareD
Was their device to win an untamed prizeK
-
I am a captive not for me the vastL
White dome of sky above the blinding sandE
The sweeping rapture of the desert blastL
Across long ranges of untrodden landE
-
Yet still they fetter not my thought In dreamsM
I desert born tread the hot wastes once moreN
Quench my deep thirst in cool untainted streamsM
And shake the darkness with my kingly roarN
