The Farewell Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AAABCDCD EFEFGAGA HIHIJKJK LMLMANAO PBPBAQAQ

He rides away with sword and spurA
Garbed in his warlike blazonryA
With gallant glance and smile for herA
Upon the dim lit balconyB
Her kiss upon his lips is warmC
Upon his breast he wears her roseD
From her fond arms to stress and stormC
Of many a bannered field he goesD
-
He dreams of danger glory strifeE
His voice is blithe his hand is strongF
He rides perchance to death from lifeE
And leaves his lady with a songF
But her blue brimmed eyes are dimG
With her deep anguish standing thereA
Sending across the world with himG
The dear white guerdon of her prayerA
-
For her the lonely vigil waitsH
When ashen dawnlights come and goI
Each bringing through the future's gatesH
Its presages of fear and woeI
For her the watch with soul and heartJ
Grown sick with dread as women mayK
Yet keeping still her pain apartJ
From the wan duties of the dayK
-
'Tis hers to walk when sunsets yieldL
Their painted splendors to the skiesM
And dream on some far battlefieldL
Perchance alone unwatched he diesM
'Tis hers to kneel in patient prayerA
When midnight stars keep sentinelN
Lest the chill death dews damp the hairA
Upon the brow she loves so wellO
-
So stands she white and sad and sweetP
Upon the latticed balconyB
From golden hair to slender feetP
No lady is so fair as sheB
He loves her true he holds her dearA
But he must ride on dangerous questQ
With gallant glance and smile of cheerA
And her red rose upon his breastQ
