Mother of her who is close to my heartA
Cease to chideB
For no small thing must I wander afarC
From the tender arms and lips of my brideB
My love with eyes like the glowing starC
In the twilight sky apartA
-
Coulds't thou have seen Him standing thereD
Ere the day was bornE
With the mild high look that was like a prayerD
Thou woulds't not marvel that I must leave allF
I hold most dear to answer the callF
Of that wonderful mornE
-
We were casting our nets in the seaG
Andrew and IH
Over the mountains a young wind cameI
To kiss the waters of GalileeG
And in the calm blue northern skyH
The gleaming crest of old Hermon roseJ
Girt with its diadem of snowsJ
And the east was smit with flameI
-
All our thoughts were simple and gladK
As toilers' should beG
Andrew that careless dark eyed ladK
Sang a song right merrilyG
Joyous of melody and wordL
As he worked with oar and net and sailM
But I dreamed of the face that would blush and paleM
When my step should be heardL
-
Then as we lifted heedless eyesN
We saw Him thereD
Where the silver waters curled on the shoreO
Behind Him the radiance of the skiesN
Shining over His long fair hairD
Wreathed it as with a crown of lightP
And oh the grandeur and the graceQ
Of that pale and kingly faceQ
We were weary and hungered with toil of the nightP
But we thought not of it moreO
-
He looked upon us with eyes that must seeG
Far in our hearts past mortal kenR
All the delights of the world grew dimS
Sweeter is seemed to suffer painT
And wander outcast of men with HimS
Than share in another's joy and gainT
Spake He thus royally quot Come with meG
I will make you fishers of men quotP
-
Mother of her who weeps at my sideP
Cease to chideP
Thou knowest not how that one word ringsU
Ever by day and by night in my earV
I cannot hearken to olden thingsU
I cannot listen to hope or fearW
Mother of her who is dearest of allF
I must follow the Nazarene's callF
