At Nightfall Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE AGHG IJAJ AEKE LMAMThe dark is coming o'er the world my playmate | A |
And the fields where poplars stand are very still | B |
All our groves of green delight have been invaded | C |
There are voices quite unknown upon the hill | B |
- | |
The wind has grown too weary for a comrade | D |
It is keening in the rushes spent and low | E |
Let us join our hands and hasten very softly | F |
To the little olden friendly path we know | E |
- | |
The stars are laughing at us O my playmate | A |
Very very far away in lonely skies | G |
The trees that were our friends are strangers to us | H |
And the fern is full of whispers and of sighs | G |
- | |
The sounds we hear are not what we may share in | I |
We may not linger where the white moths roam | J |
We must hasten yet more swiftly little playmate | A |
To the house among the pines that is our home | J |
- | |
The dark is creeping closer yet my playmate | A |
And the woods seem crowding nearer as we go | E |
Oh how very very bold have grown the shadows | K |
They may touch us as they flutter to and fro | E |
- | |
The silence is too dreadful for our laughter | L |
The night is very full of strange alarms | M |
But it cannot hurt us now O little playmate | A |
One more step and we are safe in mother's arms | M |
