A Dramatic SketchA
-
-
A Forest NightB
-
-
Alone amidst the interminable forestC
Where shall I seek for aid my weary limbsD
Torn by the briars and wasted with fatigueE
Refuse to bear me furtherF
Horrid nightB
Black rayless midnight reigns and the thick dewG
Distils its baleful drops upon my headH
-
-
And hark the topmost branches of the treesI
With dismal moan now louder and more nearJ
Shake in the rushing wind It comes it comesK
The dread tornado is there no escapeL
What howl is that which echoes from afarM
The frightful yell comes nearerF
Mighty HeavenN
No friendly torch no watchfire near to keepO
The savage foe at bay my cries aloneP
My frantic cries of agony have powerF
To scare the fell hyena from his preyQ
-
-
The torrent sweeps along a swelling riverF
Rolls dashes at my feet I dare not climbR
Yon palm for safety lest the huge black antsS
Fix on and sting me into madness HaT
That crash has fell'd the loftiest of the woodU
The stately cotton tree that could withstandV
A thousand storms whose high projecting stemsW
Twisting in many folds impenetrableX
Twin'd with convoluvi and parasitesY
Spread their broad barrier and forbade approachZ
'Tis fallen now its purple blossoms crush'dA2
And that stupendous form which once could yieldB2
A fainting army shelter is laid lowC2
-
-
I dare not linger yet I fear to flyD2
I hear the human monster's piercing howlE2
The fierce Ingrena sporting with the stormF2
Like its presiding demon He approachesG2
And as he comes he tears the branches downH2
And arms himself for slaughter I am lostI2
His wild eyes see me by the lightning's flashJ2
One moment and I perish Oh no noC2
That desp'rate leap has saved me and the coilK2
Of the huge Boa holds my shrieking foeC2
-
-
A thousand deaths surround me and I yieldB2
No more at eve beneath the ganian's shadeL2
My brave companions shall we meet to tellM2
Of toils and dangers past no more recallN2
The lovely verdure of our native valesO2
When listening to the crown bird's cheerful noteP2
So like our own wild wand'ring bird of springQ2
That fancy gives us back our homes againR2
My lov'd lost home and must I perish hereS2
Oh were I now amidst the burning sandsT2
So the bright sun once more might shine on meU2
Although in all his scorching fierceness yetV2
There might be hope I should escape his beamsW2
Or were I on the brink of some broad riverF
Where the gaunt crocodile pursued my stepsX2
So I had light to view mine enemyU2
There might be some hope but here no light can comeY2
-
-
The blastZ2
Bears shouts upon its wings new terrors stillA3
Come thronging to o'erwhelm me Gracious HeavenN
Those well known sounds those voices and my nameB3
Echoing through all the forest I am savedC3
Here here my friends rush onward ye are comeY2
In time to see me dieD2
