On the Discovery of the Cape of Good HopeA
or Cape of StormsB
-
-
Where no sound was ever heardC
But the ocean's hollow roarD
As it breaks in foamy mountainsE
Along the rugged shoreD
-
Where ev'ry wind of heavenF
That has terror on its wingsG
Howls to the startled echoH
That through each cavern ringsG
-
-
Upon that world of watersI
Where nought has ever pass'dJ
But the storm bird's glittering pinionsI
As it whirls amidst the blastJ
-
-
Where no sail has ever wanderedC
Beneath that troubled skyK
Frowns the stately Cape of StormsI
O'er the drear immensityC
-
-
Above whose hoary summitC
Where captive thunders sleepL
Three huge black clouds for everM
Their dreadful station keepL
-
-
We have gazed on what no otherM
Has ever gazed uponN
We have braved the angry spiritsI
And our victory is wonF
-
-
We have conquered all the dangersI
Of a yet unfathom'd seaI
And we bring the prize of gloryI
Our country Spain to theeI
