The woods have caught a deeper shade | D |
And darkly skirt the distant scene | C |

The blackbird breathes a sweet reply | F |
The lark's shrill fairy notes awake | E |
The echoes of his native sky | F |

The pale wild rose is blushing near | G |
And clinging tendrils round it twine | H |
That throw their gay and graceful wreaths | I |
In many a varied waving line | H |

There tremble on the slender stem | J |
The barley's rich and bending heads | K |
And here the pea in winged bloom | L |
Along the air its fragrance sheds | K |

I cannot smile though all the scene | C |
Is gay in Nature's brightest guise | M |
I think on hours that once have been | N |
And clouds o'er all the landscape rise | M |

And can no charm that nature knows | O |
The fatal power of grief destroy | P |
Ah no in vain each beauty glows | O |
When mem'ry has no gleam of joy | P |
