Rhyme Scheme: A BCDC EFEE GGHEEH IJIJ KFKFKE LELE EMEM NNOO EEOO

ON HIS DEPARTURE FROM BAHIAA
-
When thou stoodst amidst thy countrymenB
Our captive and our foeC
What voice of pity was it thenD
That check'd the fatal blowC
-
When the name of the mighty 'Man of Fire'E
Re echoed to the skyF
And our chiefs forgot their deadly ireE
Who hail'd thy victoryE
-
What voice like the softest sweetest noteG
That rings from the slender white bird's throatG
Has soothed thee so oft to restH
And thou hast said so tenderlyE
That to sit among willow isles with meE
Was to be ever blestH
-
Oh have we not wander'd in silent nightI
When the thick dews fell from the weeping boughJ
And then these eyes like the stars were brightI
But are wet like those mournful branches nowJ
-
Like the leafless plant that twines aroundK
The forest tree so fair and highF
And when in that withering clasp 'tis boundK
Leaves the blighted trunk to dieF
Thy vows round my trusting heart have boundK
And now thou leav'st me to miseryE
-
-
-
Thou wilt not return thy words are vainL
Thou wilt cross the deep blue seaE
And some dark eyed maid of thy native SpainL
Will hold thee far from meE
-
The summer will come and our willow shoreE
Will hear the merman singM
But thou wilt list to his song no moreE
When the rocks with his music ringM
-
He will murmur thy falsehood to every caveN
Or will tell of thy death on the stormy waveN
Ah no ah no 'tis of mine he'll tellO
I will weep no more farewell farewellO
-
Look from thy bark how I follow afarE
How I scorn the winds' and the billows' warE
I sink the waves ring loudly my knellO
My sorrows are passing farewell farewellO
