Thomas à? Kempis Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCCC DDEE FFCC GGHH IICC JKLL BBCC

Brother of mine good monk with cowl d headA
Walled from that world which thou hast long since fledA
And pacing thy green close beyond the seaB
I send my heart to theeB
-
Down gust sweet walks bordered by lavenderC
While eastward westward the mad swallows whirC
All afternoon poring thy missal fairC
Serene thou pacest thereC
-
Mixed with the words and fitting like a tuneD
Thou hearest distantly the voice of JuneD
The little gossipping noises in the grassE
The bees that come and passE
-
Fades the long day the pool behind the hedgeF
Burns like a rose within the windy sedgeF
The lilies ghostlier grow in the dim airC
The convent windows flareC
-
Yet still thou lingerest from pastures steepG
Past the barred gate the shepherd drives his sheepG
A nightingale breaks forth and for a spaceH
Makes sweeter the sweet placeH
-
Then the gray monks by hooded twos and threesI
Move chapelward beneath the flaming treesI
Closing thy book back by the alleys fairC
Thou followest to prayerC
-
Born to these brawling days this work sick ageJ
Oft long I for thy simpler heritageK
A thought of thee is like a breath of bloomL
Blown through a noisy roomL
-
For thou art quick not dead I picture theeB
Forever in that close beyond the seaB
And find despite this weather s headlong stirC
Peace and a comforterC
