Brother of mine good monk with cowl d headA
Walled from that world which thou hast long since fledA
And pacing thy green close beyond the seaB
I send my heart to theeB

Down gust sweet walks bordered by lavenderC
While eastward westward the mad swallows whirC
All afternoon poring thy missal fairC
Serene thou pacest thereC

Mixed with the words and fitting like a tuneD
Thou hearest distantly the voice of JuneD
The little gossipping noises in the grassE
The bees that come and passE

Fades the long day the pool behind the hedgeF
Burns like a rose within the windy sedgeF
The lilies ghostlier grow in the dim airC
The convent windows flareC

Yet still thou lingerest from pastures steepG
Past the barred gate the shepherd drives his sheepG
A nightingale breaks forth and for a spaceH
Makes sweeter the sweet placeH

Then the gray monks by hooded twos and threesI
Move chapelward beneath the flaming treesI
Closing thy book back by the alleys fairC
Thou followest to prayerC

Born to these brawling days this work sick ageJ
Oft long I for thy simpler heritageK
A thought of thee is like a breath of bloomL
Blown through a noisy roomL

For thou art quick not dead I picture theeB
Forever in that close beyond the seaB
And find despite this weather s headlong stirC
Peace and a comforterC
