Herbs Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBACCDD EFFEGGHH EIIEJJKK LM MLNNOO

A serviceable thingA
Is fennel mint or balmB
Kept in the thrifty calmB
Of hollows in the springA
Or by old houses pentC
Dear is its ancient scentC
To folk that love the days forgotD
Nor think that God is notD
-
Sage lavender and rueE
For body's hurt and illF
For fever and for chillF
Rosemary strange with dewE
For sorrow and its smartG
For breaking of the heartG
Yet pain dearth tears all come to dustH
As even the herbs mustH
-
Life everlasting tooE
Windless poignant and sereI
That blows in the old yearI
Townsmen for me and youE
Why fret for wafting airsJ
Why haste to sell our waresJ
Captains and clerks this shall befallK
This is the end of allK
-
Oh this the end indeedL
Oh unforgotten thingsM
-
Gone out of all the springsM
The quest the dream the creedL
Gone out of all the landsN
And yet safe in God's handsN
For shall the dull herbs live againO
And not the sons of menO
