The president has thus disclosedA
In words his noblest planB
'The door of hope shall not be closedA
Upon the Negro manB
-
'His opportunities must beC
With other men's the sameD
As nation's chief I will not seeC
Him forced in ways of shame '-
-
Official work he'd scarce begunE
When from his lips did fallF
'A special right I give to noneE
But equal rights to allF
-
'Square dealing for the soldiers trueG
Who made this country grandH
But more than this no man is dueG
And none shall less demandH
-
'I'm president of all the land '-
The broiling South was toldI
'For truth and fight I mean to standH
Such policy I hold '-
-
When urged to crush the Negro raceJ
He answered with a zestK
'All men of worth shall have a placeJ
True manhood is the testK
-
''Tis better all the people upL
Than keep a portion downM
You need my friends a loving cupL
Your prejudice to drownM
-
'The doors of hope are open wideN
To all within the landH
With God forever on our sideN
This sentiment will stand '-
-
With spinal column stout and strongO
With arm that's made of steelP
He crushes prejudice and wrongO
And makes the demons reelP
-
To heal the nation's open soreQ
Of hatred for a raceJ
He wider swings the open doorQ
And bares the monsters faceJ
-
No president could stem the tideN
Of opposition blindR
Since Lincoln for the Negro diedN
Till Roosevelt we findR
-
Long may he live to bless the landH
With truth and libertyC
Who for the right will take a standH
And set a nation freeC
-
Then Roosevelt for nineteen fourQ
Our president should beC
Who gives to all an open doorQ
Of opportunityC
