When Egypt said 'ExterminateA
The males among the JewsB
Fair Goshen's land make desolateA
And bid them glad adieus 'C
-
The darkest hour then was broughtA
Upon their slaveryD
But God came down with Egypt foughtA
And made the bondsmen freeD
-
No means of peace within the boutA
Could pay the price 'tis plainE
The measure they had meted outA
Was measured back againF
-
For blood of Hebrews had been spiltA
And justice did demandA
Egyptian blood to cleanse the guiltA
The firstborn of the landA
-
America how canst thou tellG
Thy tale of bondage soreH
How blood as rain from Negroes fellG
Till many were no moreH
-
The blood of Negroes cried so loudA
For vengeance from the groundA
Till clouds of sorrow wept and bowedA
And heaven's anger frownedA
-
No peaceful means 'tis understoodA
Could end the dread affrayH
For justice cried 'Slave owners' bloodA
In war the debt shall pay '-
-
The Negroes of the country nowI
Are held in open scornJ
To other peoples forced to bowI
Though often higher bornJ
-
To lynch a Negro is no crimeK
The courts of justice sayL
And so 'tis done at any timeK
A mob may set a dayL
-
The night is darkest near the dawnM
The voice of nature speaksN
The blood that's from the Negroes drawnM
A retribution seeksN
-
'Revenge is mine I will repay '-
The God of right declaresO
The savage mob with regal swayL
A nation's curse preparesO
-
America a warning takeP
Repent forsake the wrongQ
Thine evil ways at once forsakeP
Thy time cannot be longQ
-
The morning star begins to riseR
The darkest night dispelsS
Its ray of hope illumes the skiesR
And precious dawn foretellsR
-
America rouse up awakeP
For God is living stillT
Who will of wrong a sample makeP
When sin has drunk its fillT
