The ante bellum Negro prayedA
For God to intercedeB
And God in answer to him saidC
'Your children shall be freed 'D
-
The hand was seen upon the wallE
The fates at once decreedB
That Negro bondsmen one and allE
Should soon be free indeedB
-
'If Abraham Lincoln's president'B
The South said 'we'll secede '-
They apprehended he'd consentB
For Negroes to be freedB
-
To battle North against the SouthF
O'er states rights was agreedB
But echo from the cannon's mouthF
Said 'Negroes must be freed '-
-
Confed'rates did with marked successG
McClellan's steps impedeB
Till Abr'm Lincoln did confessG
That Negroes must be freedB
-
The Union boys with heaven's strengthH
From that time did succeedB
And fought with valor till at lengthH
The Negro slaves were freedB
-
The Jim Crow car for Negroes madeB
To crush their pride indeedB
Has on the harps of thinkers playedB
Those people must be freedB
-
The right of suffrage from the menI
Is taken out of greedB
A better day is coming whenI
They shall from this be freedB
-
Black men before the lyncher's ropeJ
In vain for mercy pleadB
But justice cries 'There is a hopeJ
From such you shall be freed '-
-
From ignorance and povertyB
From superstition's creedB
From those who crush his libertyB
The Negro must be freedB
-
The hand has written on the wallE
The clouds must all recedeB
For God Whose word can never fallE
Says 'Negroes must be freed '-
