Emancipation Day Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD DDEEEEDD FGHH IIJJ

The sixties brought a clash of armsA
The mem'ry of it thrills and charmsA
While Negro slaves for freedom prayedB
Till Heaven bowed to give them aidB
-
The God of nations God of rightC
Kept back success within the fightC
Till Lincoln vowed on bended kneeD
To set the Negro bondsmen freeD
-
The first of January seeD
In eighteen hundred sixty threeD
The first Emancipation DayE
When mad oppressors lost their swayE
The sun of freedom rose that dayE
The night of bondage drove awayE
When sainted Lincoln did decreeD
That slaves forever should be freeD
-
As years of time have come and goneF
For each the Negro race has borneG
Abundant fruit in freedom's nameH
That will not bring the nation shameH
-
Emancipation Day so greatI
With joy we meet to celebrateI
The Sun of Righteousness we hailJ
Who died that freedom might prevailJ
