For Linda FosterA
-
-
I-
Because we used to have leavesB
and on damp daysC
our muscles feel a tugD
painful now from when rootsE
pulled us into the groundF
-
and because our children believeG
they can fly an instinct retainedH
from when the bones in our armsI
were shaped like zithers and brokeJ
neatly under their feathersK
-
and because before we had lungsL
we knew how far it was to the bottomM
as we floated open eyedN
like painted scarves through the sceneryO
of dreams and because we awakenedP
-
and learned to speakQ
-
-
We sat by the fire in our cavesR
and because we were poor we made up a taleS
about a treasure mountainT
that would open only for usU
-
and because we were always defeatedV
we invented impossible riddlesW
only we could solveX
monsters only we could killY
women who could love no one elseZ
and because we had survivedA2
sisters and brothers daughters and sonsB2
we discovered bones that roseC2
from the dark earth and sangD2
as white birds in the treesE2
-
-
Because the story of our lifeF2
becomes our lifeF2
-
Because each of us tellsG2
the same storyO
but tells it differentlyO
-
and none of us tells itH2
the same way twiceI2
-
Because grandmothers looking like spidersK
want to enchant the childrenT
and grandfathers need to convince usU
what happened happened because of themJ2
-
and though we listen onlyO
haphazardly with one earK2
we will begin our storyO
with the word andP
