Doctor you say there are no haloesA
around the streetlights in ParisA
and what I see is an aberrationB
caused by old age an afflictionB
I tell you it has taken me all my lifeC
to arrive at the vision of gas lamps as angelsA
to soften and blur and finally banishD
the edges you regret I don't seeA
to learn that the line I called the horizonB
does not exist and sky and waterE
so long apart are the same state of beingF
Fifty four years before I could seeA
Rouen cathedral is builtG
of parallel shafts of sunB
and now you want to restoreH
my youthful errors fixedI
notions of top and bottomJ
the illusion of three dimensional spaceA
wisteria separateK
from the bridge it coversA
What can I say to convince youL
the Houses of Parliament dissolvesA
night after night to becomeJ
the fluid dream of the ThamesA
I will not return to a universeA
of objects that don't know each otherE
as if islands were not the lost childrenB
of one great continent The worldM
is flux and light becomes what it touchesA
becomes water lilies on waterE
above and below waterE
becomes lilac and mauve and yellowN
and white and cerulean lampsA
small fists passing sunlightO
so quickly to one anotherE
that it would take long streaming hairP
inside my brush to catch itQ
To paint the speed of lightO
Our weighted shapes these verticalsA
burn to mix with airP
and change our bones skin clothesA
to gases DoctorE
if only you could seeA
how heaven pulls earth into its armsA
and how infinitely the heart expandsA
to claim this world blue vapor without endR
