Rhyme Scheme: ABCCDECFGHIJKLMNOPQR STUVWLXYZA2B2XCC2AD2 E2UB2F2G2

Speaking of marvels I am aliveA
together with you when I might have beenB
alive with anyone under the sunC
when I might have been Abelard's womanC
or the whore of a Renaissance popeD
or a peasant wife with not enough foodE
and not enough love with my childrenC
dead of the plague I might have sleptF
in an alcove next to the manG
with the golden nose who poked itH
into the business of starsI
or sewn a starry flagJ
for a general with wooden teethK
I might have been the exemplary PocahontasL
or a woman without a nameM
weeping in Master's bedN
for my husband exchanged for a muleO
my daughter lost in a drunken betP
I might have been stretched on a totem poleQ
to appease a vindictive godR
or left a useless girl childS
to die on a cliff I like to thinkT
I might have been Mary ShelleyU
in love with a wrong headed angelV
or Mary's friend I might have been youW
This poem is endless the odds against us are endlessL
our chances of being alive togetherX
statistically nonexistentY
still we have made it alive in a timeZ
when rationalists in square hatsA2
and hatless Jehovah's WitnessesB2
agree it is almost overX
alive with our lively childrenC
who but for endless ifsC2
might have missed out on being aliveA
together with marvels and folliesD2
and longings and lies and wishesE2
and error and humor and mercyU
and journeys and voices and facesB2
and colors and summers and morningsF2
and knowledge and tears and chanceG2
