The days crowd in on each other brightly, endlessly
Then lay there flat.
Breathing heavily,
Waiting for something to happen
Twitching, expectant,
Then shallowly, softly, sporadically.
When nothing new comes, they lay there in sorrow.

Poet's note: I usually feel a sense of optimism with the new year, but this time it was a struggle. This poem developed over the course of a day, from the first line written in the morning to the last line written that evening.
