The Sultana's Remonstrance Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHIH JKLK MNON PDQD RLFL ASTS AUBU

IT suits thee well to weepA
As thou lookest on the fair landB
Whose sceptre thou hast heldC
With less than woman's handB
-
On yon bright city gazeD
With its white and marble hallsE
The glory of its lofty towersF
The strength of its proud wallsE
-
And look to yonder palaceG
With its garden of the roseH
With its groves and silver fountainsI
Fit for a king's reposeH
-
There is weeping in that cityJ
And a cry of woe and shameK
There's a whisper of dishonourL
And that whisper is thy nameK
-
And the stranger's feast is spreadM
But it is no feast of thineN
In thine own halls accursed lipsO
Drain the forbidden wineN
-
And aged men are in the streetsP
Who mourn their length of daysD
And young knights stand with folded armsQ
And eyes they dare not raiseD
-
There is not one whose blood was notR
As the waves of ocean freeL
Their fathers died for thy fathersF
They would have died for theeL
-
Weep not 'tis mine to weepA
That ever thou wert bornS
Alas that all a mother's loveT
Is lost in a queen's scornS
-
Yet weep thou less than woman weepA
Those tears become thine eyeU
It suits thee well to weep the landB
For which thou daredst not dieU
