The Soldier's Grave Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EBEB FBFB GHGH IJIJ KLML NOPO QROR

THERE'S a white stone placed upon yonder tombA
Beneath is a soldier lyingB
The death wound came amid sword and plumeA
When banner and ball were flyingB
-
Yet now he sleeps the turf on his breastC
By wet wild flowers surroundedD
The church shadow falls o'er the place of his restC
Where the steps of his childhood boundedD
-
There were tears that fell from manly eyesE
There was woman's gentle weepingB
And the wailing of age and infant criesE
O'er the grave where he lies sleepingB
-
He had left his home in his spirit's prideF
With his father's sword and blessingB
He stood with the valiant side by sideF
His country's wrongs redressingB
-
He came again in the light of his fameG
When the red campaign was overH
One heart that in secret had kept his nameG
Was claimed by the soldier loverH
-
But the cloud of strife came upon the skyI
He left his sweet home for battleJ
Left his young child's lisp for the loud war cryI
And the cannon's long death rattleJ
-
He came again but an altered manK
The path of the grave was before himL
And the smile that he wore was cold and wanM
For the shadow of death hung o'er himL
-
He spoke of victory spoke of cheerN
These are the words that are vainly spokenO
To the childless mother or orphan's earP
Or the widow whose heart is brokenO
-
A helmet and sword are engraved on the stoneQ
Half hidden by yonder willowR
There he sleeps whose death in battle was wonO
But he died on his own home pillowR
