The Soldier's Funeral Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DEFG HHII JJCC KKLL BBCC MNBBOO

The muffled drum rolled on the airA
Warriors with stately step were thereA
On every arm was the black crape boundB
Every carbine was turned to the groundB
Solemn the sound of their measured treadC
As silent and slow they followed the deadC
-
The riderless horse was led in the rearD
There were white plumes waving over the bierE
Helmet and sword were laid on the pallF
For it was a soldier's funeralG
-
That soldier had stood on the battle plainH
Where every step was over the slainH
But the brand and the ball had passed him byI
And he came to his native land to dieI
-
'Twas hard to come to that native landJ
And not clasp one familiar handJ
'Twas hard to be numbered amid the deadC
Before he could hear his welcome saidC
-
But 'twas something to see its cliffs once moreK
And to lay his bones on his own loved shoreK
To think that the friends of his youth might weepL
O'er the green grass turf of the soldier's sleepL
-
The bugles ceased their wailing soundB
As the coffin was lowered into the groundB
A volley was fired a blessing saidC
One moment's pause and they left the deadC
-
I saw a poor and aged manM
His step was feeble his cheek was wanN
He knelt him down on the new raised moundB
His face was bowed on the cold damp groundB
He raised his head his tears were doneO
The father had prayed o'er his only sonO
