Helmet and sword were laid on the pall | F |
For it was a soldier's funeral | G |

But the brand and the ball had passed him by | I |
And he came to his native land to die | I |

'Twas hard to come to that native land | J |
And not clasp one familiar hand | J |
'Twas hard to be numbered amid the dead | C |
Before he could hear his welcome said | C |

But 'twas something to see its cliffs once more | K |
And to lay his bones on his own loved shore | K |
To think that the friends of his youth might weep | L |
O'er the green grass turf of the soldier's sleep | L |

A volley was fired a blessing said | C |
One moment's pause and they left the dead | C |

His face was bowed on the cold damp ground | B |
He raised his head his tears were done | O |
