The Rush-bearing At Ambleside Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DDEEFF GGHHAA IIJJKK LLMMNN

SUMMER is come with her leaves and her flowersA
Summer is come with the sun on her hoursA
The lark in the clouds and the thrush on the boughB
And the dove in the thicket make melody nowB
The noon is abroad but the shadows are coolC
Where the green rushes grow in the dark forest poolC
-
We seek not the hedges where violets blowD
There alone in the twilight of ev'ning we goD
They are love tokens offered when heavy with dewE
To a lip yet more fragrant an eye yet more blueE
But leave them alone to their summer soft dreamF
We seek the green rushes that grow by the streamF
-
Away from the meadow although the long grassG
Be filled with young flowers that smile as we passG
Where the bird's eye is bright as the sapphires that shineH
When the hand of a beauty is decked from the mineH
We want not their gems and we want not their flowersA
But we seek the green rush in the dark forest bowersA
-
The cowslip is ringing its fairy like chimeI
Sweet bells by whose music Titania keeps timeI
The rose bush is covered with cups that unfoldJ
Their petals that tremble in delicate goldJ
But we seek not their blossoms in garlands to blendK
We seek the green rush where the willow trees bendK
-
The green rush the green rush we bear it alongL
To the church of our village with triumph and songL
We strew the cold chancel and kneel on it thereM
While its fresh odours rise with our voices in prayerM
Hark the peal from the old tower in praise of it ringsN
Let us seek the green rush by the deep woodland springsN
