The Record Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFG HIJI KLML NOPO IQOQ RSTS UHVH WLFL

HE sleeps his head upon his swordA
His soldier's cloak a shroudB
His church yard is the open fieldC
Three times it has been plough'dB
-
The first time that the wheat sprung upD
'Twas black as if with bloodE
The meanest beggar turn'd awayF
From the unholy foodG
-
The third year and the grain grew fairH
As it was wont to waveI
None would have thought that golden cornJ
Was growing on the graveI
-
His lot was but a peasant's lotK
His name a peasant's nameL
Not his the place of death that turnsM
Into a place of fameL
-
He fell as other thousands doN
Trampled down where they fallO
While on a single name is heap'dP
The glory gain'd by allO
-
Yet even he whose common graveI
Lies in the open fieldsQ
Died not without a thought of allO
The joy that glory yieldsQ
-
That small white church in his own landR
The lime trees almost hideS
Bears on the walls the names of thoseT
Who for their country diedS
-
His name is written on those wallsU
His mother read it thereH
With pride oh no there could not beV
Pride in the widow's prayerH
-
And many a stranger who shall markW
That peasant roll of fameL
Will think on prouder ones yet sayF
This was a hero's nameL
